Ben Foster's first season at Old Trafford could be over before it has even begun after the goalkeeper was forced to undergo knee surgery.

There has been widespread speculation that Foster would be handed the number-one shirt by Sir Alex Ferguson after a series of mistakes from Edwin van der Sar this season, but injury may now save Ferguson from having to make the decision.

Foster withdrew from the England 'B' squad that faced Albania after suffering a recurrence of pain that had troubled him in recent months and that prevented him from fully extending his right knee.

He underwent keyhole surgery at Manchester's Alexandra Hospital to 'clean out' the knee, but must now decide whether to undergo further surgery to fully correct the problem. That could see him ruled out for several months of the next campaign.

Wouldn't keep him out for the rest of the season, but rather we sorted out these problems before he became an integral part of the team and it effected our performances mid-campaign.

Agreed. Its better to have the surgery now rather than later. We still have the two goalies we had the season just gone. VDS and Kus are class so its not too worrying. I just feel sorry for Foster. Sure he will be back he is still young.

Good idea to get this sorted now, it's obvious he was going to play second fiddle to vds anyway, cds has about a year or two left in him so it's wise that Ben be injury free when his time comes to take the number 1 shirt.
