experience is a major factor why lahm will lead here......i go by potential in his case....in others i take current skill.....but richards has been called up for england at 19......he is an influential player and in the wanted list of every big manager....

Right now Lahm is the better all round player. Richards has weaknesses but he
has the potential to be an extremley good defender in the future. Lahm is a
quality player but the only thing I'd find annoying with Lahm is the fact that he's a
lot like Hargreaves in terms of injuries. He does pck up his fair share and doesn't
appear on the pitch as much as you'd want.

Overall, I'd go for Lahm, but next year of the year after, I'm sure I'll be on here
raving about Richards.

From other internet site.....

Although Lahm is right-footed, and while he played as a right wing-back as a youth, today he is almost exclusively played as a left wing-back. The reason for this is partly because good left-footed wing-backs are rare in German football, and his signature move (running with the ball from the left flank and then dribbling towards the centre over his strong right foot) is so effective that putting Lahm onto the "correct" side would rob him of his best offensive weapon.
In my own words:

I like his versatility that he can display both his defensive prowess on both the left & right flank. Lahm possessed electrifying burst of pace, great overlapping runs down the flanks, excellent man-marking ability & the ability to thunder powerful shots straight at goal and thus, that makes him the best 5 wing-back in the world currently! He's a quality footballer and as stood out when ever I've seen him. Would be a very good coup if we were to secure his services just for £8m!!
So what are ue even waitin' for, get him SAF!! And replying to ur question, Philipp Lahm shades it for me ;)

For me, Lahm. I've been a fan of his for a long time, and should United sign him he'd succeed in being a fan-favourite in my opinion. He's not afraid to get forward (as was proven at the world cup in 2006), and he has good leadership qualities about him.

Richards is a fantastic player, and in a few years time may end up surpassing Lahm. However, as has been said before, experience is the key and that's something Lahm has and Richards doesn't at this moment in time.

I'd rather an unknown frankly. I mean call me a traditionalist but I like the idea of Lahm spending his career at Bayern. You know keep your homegrown talent and don't go around splashing 10's of millions of pounds on certified talent when for a little extra effort you can find that spectacular unknown and grab him for 250 000 pounds. Turn him into a mega star... Oh sorry. I was getting all wistful again. I just wish we could build another team from reserve players.
