Hi, Italy here.

Just to talk, who do you think have been the best players during football modern era ???......... let's think about last 25 years.

There have been lots of great players, of course, but I think there is a narrow circle of legends who put themself in a special position out of time, entering the history of football

The caractheristics I consider for my valuation are the following ones:

- the player must be of absolute class, of course, but also a winner
- both things, class and winning-skill, he must show them in every competition: league, european cups, international matches
- he must be the leader of his team, decisive in the decisive matches
- players who were universally recognized as the best expression of football in their period, able then to excite mediatic attention from all over the world

I have 5 names, that I list in chronological order:
PLATINI
MARADONA
VAN BASTEN
RONALDO
ZIDANE

Actually, my order of preference is not very different, as my signature shows: just put Zidane in the second position and you'll have it.............................. I can explain such rank if the discussion takes off

Maradona number 1 every day of the week simply because he is the greatest
footballer to ever play the game.
Zidane 2-genius who won it all.
Ronaldo 3-as above and record scorer in World Cups.
Then Roy Keane, Cantona and Giggs.

Platini was a great player, a Juve idol but just slightly before my time.
Or I just didnt see enough of him play. He is a legend in France also.
I like ex-Juve player Roberto Baggio. he would make my top 10.
Stoichkov, Romario, van Basten, Gullit, Hagi and Rivaldo are other notables.

Thank you sir. Irwin never gets credit for being as amazing as he really was. I didn't think it was right to be put players I haven't seen on it. Plus I love that formation with the deep-lying central midfielders/playmakers that compliment the wingers, who in turn compliment the guy playing the Supporting striker role, who plays off of the out-and-out striker/target man.

so what../?.
I love John O'Shea, but to say he's one of the best of the past 25 years is pushing it, considering he's never even been one of the best at his club.

Why would you need a squad player if you're going to take 9 subs anyway? He did provide the funniest football moment of all time imo, when he nutmegged Figo.

Jonathan Greening won Champions League in Barcelona in 99 and won a few PL titles as well but not many think he's one of the greatest ever in the last 25 years.

Yes, spellbound..........

I have to recall the original sense of my topic: we're not talking about good players, and great players neither........................ we're talking about the "legends" of the football

I listed some caractheristics they have got to have..............but they have to have all of them, not only one

I can add a fourth one:.......... players who were universally recognized as the best expression of football in their period, able then to excite mediatic attention from all over the world

About some squads I saw, I think they would not arrive 10th either in PL......

My list of best players in no particular order, BUT I must start with Giggs, because my love for Man Utd started when I was mesmerized by Giggsy's skill

  • Ryan Giggs
  • Maradonna
  • Eric Cantona
  • Marco van Basten
  • Rivaldo
  • Ronaldo (fat one)
  • Ronaldinho
  • Roberto Baggio
  • Zinedine Zidane
  • Luis Figo
I did not have the privilege of watching Platini, but Juventus have one future star Sebastian Giovinco - he is a magician with the ball!
