Having been mightily impressed by young Frazier Campbell's outing last night for Hull, it got me thinking about the last time a forward came up through the ranks and established himself in the first team. I couldn't for the life of me remember. Anyone care to enlighten me?

With both Wellbeck and Campbell impressively showcasing their respective talents this season I wonder if anyone thinks they have a realistic future within the first team? I'm sceptical after having such high hopes for Rossi (who we couldn't really claim as completely home grown). He's flying with Villareal at the moment (flying with submarines? - strange image) and I'm sure he would have got chances with us this year after Ole's retirement and Saha's ongoing injury nightmare. I just hope we don't let another fine talent slip through the net.

I thought Mark Hughes was the last striker that came up through our ranks who was actually good, or so i read.

I know that, on these forums at least, everybody seems to be waxing lyrical about Fraiser Campbell and Danny Welbeck. I keep a rough track on Campbell and I know he's been scoring for Hull, who are currently 2nd and on track for promotion, so he's been doing great. Welbeck on the other hand I haven't heard much about so where is he? Lot's of people seem to rate him so highly so I'd like to know what you're basing that on. Not that I don't believe you, I'm just curious is all.

Has there been one since Mark Robins?

Paul Scholes came through as a striker but was then converted into an attacking midfield player.
Robins is a good shout but he was hardly prolific and definitely not a world beater.

I can't wait for the day when we see a forward come through the ranks as great in the position as Scholes or Giggsy are in midfield.

Sparky!! How could I forget. Yeah that definitely counts.

Even more so because it gives me hope we might see Rossi return ala the Welsh dragon. I'm pretty sure there was a clause in his contract saying we had first dibs if he gets sold, although I might be making that up.

There is a buy-back clause for Rossi.

Doubt Fergie will go back on his word though. Sir Alex will probably have retired, when this could be enforced though.

Although, when Rossi retires, Fergie will probably still be going strong.

Shining light in those youth and reserve teams. Miles ahead of the rest.

First team training, and substitute places. Saudi trip.

Points to a large career ahead of him.

It is difficult for a striker to break through into the United first team, because they have no real time to bed in. As soon as they are put onto the picth, fans and pundits expect goals. It is probably easier for a defender or midfieler to be introduced to first team action, because there is not as much pressure on them. Welbeck is showing a lot of promise for a 17 year old, but as the old saying goes, you can't make a career on potential.

Welbeck plays in the reserves, having been promoted there by Sir Alex, after his imense displays in the youths. He's a tall lad, a bit gangly and looks like he's just strolling around the park but don't let that fool you, he's lethal. He's got power, amazing pace and is very, very skillful. Any time I've watched a reserve, or youth game, he comands the front line, menacing the defenders and scrores very often. He looks the part alright He's a bit like Kanu, if you're looking for a comparason

I'd like to see Welbeck and Frazer go on loan together to forge a prolific partnership. I'd like them two to be given chances next season, last 20mins of a match, bring off Rooney and Tevez bring on Frazer and Welbeck.. Frazer is quick and a reasonably good finisher, Welbeck is likt ehw wide player who l;oves coming from wide and cutting in. also not a bad finsiher..
together they'd forge an effective partnership...

Maybe, we could flog Campell to Spary in exchange for Santa Cruz?
