KEWELL 'SO CRUEL'
Leeds fans outraged as Aussie star joins Turks

HARRY KEWELL has sparked outrage at his old club Leeds by joining Turkish outfit Galatasaray on a free transfer from Liverpool.

Kewell was a member of the Leeds team that played the Turks eight years ago after two of their fans had been killed.

eThe Aussie striker has signed a two-year deal worth £40,000-a-week with the Turkish champions.

Eight years ago, Kewell was a member of the United side beaten 2-0 by Galatasaray in a UEFA Cup semi-final first leg clash in Istanbul, which went ahead just 24 hours after two Leeds supporters, Kevin Speight and Christopher Loftus, were murdered on the streets of the Turkish capital by hooligan Galatasaray followers.

Ray Fell, chairman of Leeds United Supporters Club, revealed: "Many of us are appalled by Kewell's decision.

"They will see this as callous, uncaring and a real kick in the teeth to them, the two lads who so tragically lost their lives and the football club.

Shocked

"I am shocked and extremely disappointed that a member of that Leeds squad, who along with his team-mates, the families of Kevin and Christopher and everyone else connected with the club went through the trauma and sadness of that occasion, has signed for Galatasaray.

"For us now to have to see one of our ex-players from that sad time taking the applause from Galatasaray fans will be sickening."

Kewell spent eight years at Elland Road before leaving for Merseyside. He joined the Reds at a time when Leeds were having to off-load their top stars because the club had hit financial difficulties.

Fell added: "Nobody here had a bad word to say about Harry when he went to Liverpool because the fans could understand the reasons why he was leaving.

"There was no blame attached to him then, but this is different. The fans won't forgive him for this."

people shouldn't hate a club based on the bad behaviour of a few individuals. If some United supporters killed 2 Spurs fans I wouldn't want Spurs to hate United forever. **** happens. The people responsible should just get what's coming to them and the club should make a public apology, and then there shouldn't be bad blood between the clubs.

Maybe Kewell didn't have many options outside of the UK. Give him a break. He isn't obligated to follow the wishes of a crappy old club of his.

seriously do we really give a crap what ex sheep shaggers players do . I personally dont.
Do you think those hubcap robbing , car stereo stealing scousers have never set foot inside the city of Sheffield since 95 of their own fans died at hillsborough , sadly i might add . No . What about all the years of abuse United have had to put up with over our boys who died at Munich from Leeds supporters . Sorry if I seem a bit cold but **** Leeds and everything about them .

Some people say my opinion may be wrong or disrespectful, but here goes anyway;

Why should Kewell not join a club because a small group of their supporters killed an old clubs supporters?

It was a while ago, and it had nothing to do with the club. The group who killed the supporters will, most likely, be in jail (well, I would hope) and if he was getting a good financial deal, and he thought that the club suited his ambitions, why not?

I, personally, wouldn't join a Turkish club because the supporters are pretty nutty. But I'm not Harry Kewell.

And, tbh, Leeds fans are a bit rich. They sing Munich songs, they have a high percentage of hooligan supporters etc. So, imo, they are in no place to tell Harry Kewell who he should and shouldn't join.

Sorry but I'm going to buck the trend and say the Leeds supporters can go take a long walk of a short pier. :)

I honestly can't stand supporters who somehow believe that players should consult fans from every club they've

ever played for before making personal decisions. I'll cop a lot of flak for saying this but I believe that a player

should be allowed to play for whoever he wants.

I like Kewell but despite rumors I didn't think he had a shot at a Roma move.

So naturally he would want a smaller club, who need a good but not too expensive player and can still offer CL football.

Harry playing for Galatasaray doesn't mean he condones the murder of Leeds fans. What sort of Rubbish is that?

If a Jewish man goes to work for a German firm is he a traitor? Have a go at the Chairman of the supporters trust.

Saying "They're appalled". Geez, overreact much? Bit of a joke really. It's tragic that 2 Leeds fans were killed but

you can't go around holding a grudge for the rest of eternity. That's worse than the original tragedy. Eventually you move on.

In a sort of related side note ever notice how English clubs are the worst when it comes to transfers between rivals?

When you look at Real & Barca, as much as it infuriates fans, they are forever stealing each others players.

Inter Milan practically built a team out of Juventus deserters. It's only England where players from big clubs have to

leave the country if they want to move. What's with that? Just curious.

It is one of those 'of all the clubs in all the World' situations but I doubt Kewell would even have taken the deaths of the 2 Leeds fans into consideration when making his decision.

It happened 8 years ago at a club he hasn't played for in 5 years and, let's face it, this move is money-driven.

Some Leeds fans will think what he is doing is immoral but who cares what they think? This is Kewell's decision and he is not condoning the actions of those Galatasaray fans or asking that they are forgiven. He is simply going there to play football.

He must have thought about his old club a little bit because
he chose the same number he wore when playing for Leeds.
Yeah, I heard that he was taking the number 19 as a 'mark of respect'. Whether this was decided before or after he started getting pilloried by Leeds fans I don't know.

its too intelligent an argument for the leeds fan that has loaned out the shared brain cell for the week.

respect to the lads that got stabbed but leeds fans aint been the best fans down the years and still goes on to this day. we could have as easily been talking bout galatasaray fans being stabbed/beaten up.

kewell is his own boss and should go where he wishes his career to progress.

like he dont choose where leeds people should choose where to work...Mcdonalds or Burger King!!!!

kewell has the right to play wherever he wants its his career or whats left of it, leeds fans should be more concerned about their clubs troubles and not the life of a former player. they are hardly the most decorated of fans.
