Ok, so here's a thread about our lovely league, called Liga Sagres, and I'm posting this as we play week 21. All the games between the big 3 have been played, and it's still a close race, but porto seem in line to win another, a much closer one than last year, where they won with 15 or 16 points, which is basically due to the differences in squad value, with porto still riding high on their european earnings. benfica pretty much buy a new team and coach every year, where they get their money I don't know, but I can guess... This year, they've played a few decent games, but some disastrous ones too, but still, all in all, a better year for them, since last year's 4th place and 0 trophies didn't make fans happy.
As for Sporting, we're still mostly a home grown team, we've won a few cups in recent years, but the league still escapes us. Were the team with the smallest budget, of the Big Three, we could be doing better, but there's a few primma-donnas in the squad, that think only of money, and are producing $h!t.
The biggest surprise so far as been Leixões, newly promoted to the League, and currently in contention for a European spot.
This is how it stands right now:
Team Points Played
1. FC Porto 45 21
2. Benfica 43 21
3. Sporting 41 21
4. Sp. Braga 36 21
5. Leixões 35 21
6. Nacional 35 21
7. Marítimo 33 21
8. V. Guimarães 27 21
9. E. Amadora 26 21
10. Académica 24 21
11. Naval 23 21
12. P. Ferreira 19 21
13. V. Setúbal 19 21
14. Trofense 18 21
15.Rio Ave 17 21
16. Belenenses 16 21
Week 21 Fixtures:
Rio Ave 1-1 Marítimo
Sporting 2-0 P. Ferreira
Leixões 1-4 F.C. Porto
V. Guimarães 3-1 Belenenses
Académica 1-0 Trofense
E. Amadora 2-2 Sp. Braga
Naval 1-2 Benfica
V. Setúbal 2-0 Nacional
As a final note, a comment on referees. These might seem a little rose coloured, but it's what I see. There's the Big 3, and then there's the rest. Pretty much every single year, the Big 3 end up with decisions going in their way against the others, sad, but very true. However, of the 3, Sporting is clearly the poor cousin. We've had a grand total of 10 goals wrongly disallowed this season, we had a penalty beeing given against us on foul a full 5 meters from the box (!!) and we've had our players massacred with little or no disciplinary action. Nevertheless, if there's a team that has very good reasons for complaint, that is Braga, because they both dominated and created chances to win their games against both benfica and porto, and were quite literally robbed of 6 points, since they lost both matches. Curiously (or not), in their game against Sporting, they won 3-2 with a goal that didn't cross the line...
There's 4 more games today, and another tomorrow, so I'll update this after those games are over, and then I'll try to keep this as much up to date as possible.
Not all games are streamed, but a good ammount are. you can find most of them here:
