Fulham and Sunderland are battling for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans.

Manager Lawrie Sanchez knows Evans well having selected him while in charge of Northern Ireland but Sunderland boss Roy Keane is also determined to buy the 20-year-old after he impressed during a loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be keen to sell in January after growing concerned at Evans's lack of progress.

Evans to sunderland

ROY KEANE will try to sign Manchester United defender Jonny Evans this month.

Evans, 20 tomorrow, is the subject of a rape allegation resulting from the United players' Christmas do.

Sunderland boss Keane had him on loan in the second half of last season.

Evans played 18 games scoring one goal and had a major part in helping the Black Cats lift the Championship title.

He was also voted the Wearsiders' Young Player of the Season.

Keano tried to re-sign him in the summer but United chief Alex Ferguson blocked the deal as he believed Evans was ready for the first-team.

But Keane is prepared to offer £2million for the Northern Ireland international now as he tries to keep Sunderland in the Premier League.

The Stadium of Light boss will test Reading with an improved bid for midfielder Stephen Hunt.

Keane has a £20m war chest at his disposal and previously had a £2.5m bid for Hunt, 26, rejected.

He is also chasing Portsmouth's £3m-rated midfielder Matt Taylor, 26, and Blackburn's unsettled Robbie Savage, 33, who could cost £2m.

Meanwhile, Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy, 24, insists a £1m move to QPR is not a done deal.

He said: “We'll have to see. I've a good few years left on my contract here.â€
i like the lad but feel now is mabey right time to sell
2mill is a good price
as he ain't impressed me much this season

im not up for selling him - i think he's got a good future

A loan move though would be ideal, get some 1st team football under his belt to help his developement and it might help him get away from everything thats been happening to him recently.

btw i think if |Keane is able to sign Taylor and Savage aswel that would be some very good signings for them in january

I agree with Solsk, a loan wouldn't do him any harm.

Firstly I agree with all of the above that a loan deal would probably be more suitable as this boy has talent and could have a big future in the game.

Im pretty sure he will be out the door this month whether he is sold or loaned.
SAF will be pretty pissed off with his recent antics and might want him out the door anyway. #Just got to wait and see on this one...

Fergie sends under-pressure Evans to be under Keane's wing at Sunderland AFC

Controversial Manchester United defender Jonathan Evans is to join Sunderland
AFC on loan until the end of the season — despite offers from Wigan Athletic,
Birmingham City and Sheffield United.

Evans, who was 20 on Wednesday, was arrested last month over an allegation of
rape at United's Christmas party — an accusation he denies — and has been
bailed until February 23.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned the defender about his behaviour and
believes Sunderland AFC , under former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, is
the best place for him to progress.

Keane, who still hopes to tie down a deal for Blackburn Rovers defensive
midfielder Robbie Savage and Reading's winger Stephen Hunt, had Northern
Ireland international Evans on loan last season.

Ferguson has yet to decide on other proposals for Philip Bardsley, on loan at
Sheffield United, or from Sunderland AFC again for Danny Simpson.

Meanwhile, Paul Scholes says he is on course to return at the end of the month.

The United midfielder has started running again after spending more than two
months on the sidelines following knee ligament surgery. He said: "Everything
seems to be OK."

Evans Hoping For Deal

Cheltenham trialist Sean Evans has revealed he would be "very keen" to sign for the club.

The 20-year-old, who scored the Robins' winner in the midweek County Cup semi-final with Bishops Cleeve, will be released by Manchester United at the end of the season and admitted he would love to join the League One outfit permanently.

He told the Gloucester Echo: "I have really enjoyed this week and the camaraderie in the squad is superb so this would be an ideal starting block for my career. It's up to the manager, but if he thinks I am good enough I would be very keen to come to an agreement."

The left winger admits he always faced an uphill task establishing himself at Old Trafford but is now looking forward to a fresh start at a new club.

"When Sir Alex Ferguson spends £19million on players who are younger than you, it's always going to be difficult at Manchester United," he added.

"I gave it my best shot. I need to find another club, and hopefully I can put all the things I learned there into practice at Cheltenham."

Black Cats Eye Evans

Evans to Sunderland ?

Sunderland are hopeful of clinching a permanent deal for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans later this month.

Black Cats chief Roy Keane believes a £5m bid for the Northern Ireland international will persuade Sir Alex Ferguson to cash in on the 20-year-old.

Evans is currently enjoying his second loan spell at the Stadium of Light and has been instrumental in Sunderland's improvement during the second half of the campaign.

Keane always knew he had no chance of signing the Irishman last summer after Evans' first stint on Wearside, but Gerard Pique's emergence at Old Trafford has convinced Evans he is no nearer to breaking through than he was 12 months ago.

Evans, who has made more than 30 appearances for Sunderland, has still to make his league debut for United as is resigned to having to leave if he wants first-team football.

However, the Black Cats aren't the only club interested in Evans, although he would prefer a move there more than anywhere else.

let him go , there are lots of players with potential who dont make it with the reds and have good careers away from old trafford.
good players like e banks blake and frasier campbell who was man of the match last night for hull city.
You have have to be a cut above to make it at united

he has got a lot of potential! im from Northern Ireland and i watch him playing internationals!! He has got undoubted quality and potential and i am a big fan of his!! However, Man Utd first team quality? I am not convinced, however i do think that these young players need to be given the chance that they deserve to prove themselves!!!

Yes you are right the young players do need a chance , and evans is a very good player , i was dissapointed he never played at right back when neville was injured , although brown has done superbly well.
The trouble is the rio vidic partnership is very stable and for anyone to displace them will take some doing , just ask pique and he is better than evans

yes i understand the the rio vidic partnership is too good to break up, thats is why i doubt that he would be utd first tem quality, however rio vidic will not be about forever, and if the likes of evans and pique do not get blooded into the first team at some stage we will go out and pay another 30mill on a defender, which may have been avoided if evans/pique got the chance in smaller matches!!! yes, pique if definately better than evans, i dont doubt that and i now rest a lot easier when rio/vidic are injured knowing that he can come in and do a good job!!!
