Simmo joins Rovers on loan

The promising young full-back, who has previously enjoyed spells at Royal Antwerp, Sunderland and Ipswich Town, will further his footballing education at Ewood Park for the entire 2008/09 campaign.

Simpson has made eight senior appearances for United, and had featured heavily in the Reds' recent pre-season preparations, most recently starting Saturday's victory over Espanyol in the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer testimonial.

Danny follows fellow United youngsters Tom Heaton (Cardiff City) and Febian Brandy (Swansea City) in penning temporary deals ahead of the 08/09 campaign.

Premier League rules will prohibit Simpson from appearing in either of Rovers' matches against United this season.

I suppose this is good news for him. Hopefully he'll get plenty of games this season and it is good that he'll be playing for a decent PL team and get valuable experience at this level.

I'm a big fan and he certainly has the potential to be a very good player in future. Hopefully, he'll get regular football, and can show what a talented player he is.

I think he should be staying here as cover, but he'll be better of with regular Premiership football.

But hopefully it doesn't become a permanent move.

it's gonna be a realy tough competition between him and Rafael...in the next few years...but i like him a lot....and he's english....too bad eagles left....him...martin...campbell..and simpson..looked like the english replacements for neville..scholes...giggs...

simpson has impressed on the games he played for united.

seems shame to stick him out on loan instead of bringing him on with good quality players and experience that 5-10 games would be worth more to him than full season at Blackburn.

Young Reds centre-back Craig Cathcart has joined Plymouth Argyle on a six-month loan deal.

The Northern Ireland U21 international will look to gain first-team experience with the Championship club under the supervision of manager Paul Sturrock.

Cathcart goes straight into the Plymouth squad to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday in the opening league fixture of the season.

The 19-year-old, who won the 2007 Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award at United, is highly rated at Old Trafford. He emerged through the youth ranks as captain of the U18s, before excelling in the Reds reserves.

The Belfast-born defender is no stranger to loan spells, having enjoyed half season in Belgium's second division with Royal Antwerp. A spell in the Championship will help progress his career even further.

"Craig is a big cente-half that we have been watching from afar," revealed Plymouth boss Sturrock on the Pilgrims' website. "He is a good centre-half with good qualities, and you don't play for Manchester United if you're not of a very decent standard. I am very happy to bring the boy on board and it is up to him to get himself in the team."

Wondered when someone would mention this story, Cathcart was rated as one of Fergie's best youngsters EVER last season and great things are expected of him.

Good to keep up to-date with what he is up to. Let's hope he has a good season at Plymouth.

Saw him play with the "European Under-21 XI" or whatever that lot was called, looks absolutely AMAZING.

Well, hes a great prospect imo.

Manchester United winger set for Blues move

Lee Martin is expected to join Birmingham City Football Club this week.

The winger has failed to establish himself in the Manchester United first team setup, although he has impressed during their preparations for the coming season.

Despite this Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to let the 21-year-old, who impressed at Sheffield United last season, leave Old Trafford to gain regular first team football.

The Blades would like to take Martin back on a permanent basis this summer, but it is believed that Alex McLeish will win the race and take him to Birmingham City for £1.5million.

United youngsters like Campbell, Jonny Evans, Lee Martin, Danny Simpson, Chris Eagles, Darron Gibson, Sam Hewson, Danny Welbeck and Ben Amos are all considered stars of the future.

I don't understand why SAF is not giving these guys their chance to play in the first team!! Ok, he has a fully fit squad but why would he go and buy berbatov for £25m, when he has such a wide selection of young and talented player from the reserve team!!

He already sold Eagles, who i believe was not given his chance last year, the lad refused to go on loan to prove a point!

SAF was not so confident in the youngsters as he was with the 95/96 season when he put youngsters like scholes,beck,butt and the neville brothers in the mix with the greats of that time like King Cantona..

I'm not judging him but after saying that thay were the best reserves he had seen over the years i think he could atleast given a chance to the best of them.
And for me the best of the selection above is LEE MARTIN who was on loan at sheffied united last season and did well. He can be the perfect replacement for Ronaldo [on who i don't want to make any comments!!] if only he gets his chance to play in some of the premier league matches>

hes got high hopes for Campbell and Jonny Evans there both going to get there chance in the first team this season for sure so dont get to down just yet we have a big squad with classy players and some reserves will make the grade some wont its just down to how they play and if fergie dosnt think there good enough then i have every confedance in him

Gutted about this to be honest. Saw him a few years ago in one of those youth cup finals, was head and shoulders above everyone else.

Disappointing that he is leaving plus we wont be making that big a profit as he did cost us a lot of money when we bought him.

I've heard nothing of this, I rate Martin the highest out of all the young players, if he's not good enough then I have little hope for any of the rest of them!
I think Martin will stay this year he has a chance to get a few games in, I think he's quality!

But players like Rossi and Pique, were promised first-team football, but didn't get any, or enough. Especially Pique, who was treated badly by us imo.

Hopefully the Silva twins, Possebon, Evans, Campbell etc get more opportunities than Pique and Rossi.

i dont think thats a bad move for the lad although it would of been alot nicer to see him on loan for a prem team like bolton or blackburn but forrest aint the worst of teams

Forest Delighted With Martin's Debut

The 21-year-old went straight into Forest’s side for their 4-0 Carling Cup first round victory over Morecambe last night.

Chris Cohen put Forest ahead with a free-kick, awarded after Martin was fouled on his Forest debut. He was also booked later on as Robert Earnshaw (two) and Adam Newbold scored to complete a comfortable win for the hosts, who will meet Sunderland in the next round.

Forest manager Colin Calderwood was impressed with his new signing, commenting: "I think for the amount of time he's been here we can only be delighted with his contribution.

"I've seen him play before and it was almost like a seamless transition.

"He looked like he'd played with the boys round about him before.

"He picked up good positions and we knew he was going to add pace to us and that would give us a bigger threat.

"He was a little bit ill over the weekend as well and he's not 100% so that's quite appetising, isn't it?"

Martin made two appearances for United, also in the Carling Cup, but has gained plenty of league experience during previous loan spells.

The Somerset-born winger has been borrowed by Rangers, Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle and, most recently, Sheffield United.
