Manchester United 0-1 Portsmouth

Portsmouth are through to the FA Cup semi-final after knocking out Manchester United at Old Trafford in a dramatic and controversial quarter-final.

After United had their appeals for a first-half penalty turned down, they paid the penalty themselves in the second-half.

Their substitute goalkeeper, Tomasz Kuszczak, on for the injured Edwin Van der Sar, was sent off for bringing down Milan Baros in a one-on-one contest, and Sulley Muntari stroked the penalty past Rio Ferdinand, who donned the gloves.

Pompey had defended heroically, with David James in great form, in the face of sustained pressure from United, who could not find a way past. So Pompey won for the first time at Old Trafford for the first time since 1957.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson made three changes from the side that beat Lyon, Paul Scholes, Carlos Tevez and Owen Hargreaves all returning, with Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Anderson standing down. But Ferguson also had to make a late change to his bench when Louis Saha suffered an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Ji-Sung Park.

Portsmouth, without a win at Old Trafford since 1957, showed one change from the side that lost to Everton at the weekend, John Utaka replacing Jermain Defoe in attack.

Neither side started the game at their best, with defences dominating.

But United's Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to have been identified as the danger man as he came in for some close attention from Pompey. The winger was knocked to the ground early on by a late challenge from Lassana Diarra on the halfway line, then stormed down the right wing until he was pulled down by another late challenge, this time from Sulley Muntari.

Ronaldo's free-kick from the right was headed wide of David James' near-post by Paul Scholes from five yards, before the Portuguese star burst into the Portsmouth area at pace and was knocked over by Sylvain Distin's shoulder charge. The referee waved play-on to the fury of Ferguson on the touchline.

When Ronaldo had his shirt pulled by Papa Bouba Diop on the halfway line, the Pompey man was booked.

Portsmouth showed their attacking threat when Nico Kranjcar's dipping shot from 25 yards was saved in the centre of his goal by Edwin Van der Sar.

But when Diarra's corner from the right was cleared, United broke away at speed and Carlos Tevez played in Wayne Rooney one-on-one with James. Rooney dallied too long and the Pompey derfence cleared, but only to Carlos Tevez, whose powerful shot was headed off the line by Glen Johnson as Pompey survived.

Rooney slid in late on Kranjcar on the right to get his name in the book, then Diarra's corner from the left was met by a header from Hermann Hreidarsson that Van der Sar saved.

Scholes ran onto Tevez's pass and fired in a powerful shot but Sol Campbell blocked the effort, before the Argentinian cut in from the left and saw his drive well saved by James in the centre of the goal.

Nani tumbled to the ground as he stormed into the Portsmouth are with Utaka, but the referee correctly waved play on. Ronaldo then won a free-kick after being fouled by Diarra, who was booked. is afternoon.

In first-half stoppage time, Nani's run was halted by a strong challenge from Campbell ar the expense of a corner, which James missed but Johnson cleared strongly.

The second-half began with United forced to change their goalkeeper, Tomasz Juszczak coming on in place of injured Van der Sar.

Nani's cross from the right was met by a looping header from Rooney, which James claimed easily in the centre of his goal. United pressure continued with Hargreaves' run forward halted by a strong challenge from Johnson on the edge of the area.

At the other end, Muntari's powerful shot from 30 yards was blocked by Brown on the edge of the Manchester United area, before Portsmouth made their first change of the afternoon, Milan Baros coming on for Kanu in attack.

Nani's corner found Ronaldo through a desperate goalmouth scramble, and the United winger took aim but scuffed his shot just wide of James' right-hand post 15 yards out.

Brown raced across to clear the ball from danger as Baros tried to burst through one-on-one with Kuszczak, Pompey underlining their threat on the break.

Tevez's effort from 25 yards deflectwd off Johnson and out of play for a United corner as the Red Devils continued to search for the breakthrough.

In an early warning of what was to follow, Baros ran through one-on-one with Kuszczak, but the referee called back play as the Czech striker had pulled Hargreaves' shirt.

Ronaldo and Rooney worked a neat one-two before the Portuguese shot wide of the post from the edge of the area.

Patrice Evra broke into the Pompey box and tried to slide the ball to Tevez, who would have had an open goal to aim at, but the pass was inaccurate and Pompey cleared.

United made a double change, with Anderson and Michael Carrick coming on for Hargreaves and Tevez, and switched to a front-three of Rooney, Ronaldo and Nani with Anderson, Carrick and Scholes in midfield

Ronaldo played Carrick through one-on-one with James and he rounded the keeper and looked set to score until Distin came to the rescue with a superb saving tackle.

With United dominatying possession and piling on the pressure, Evra won the ball outside the Portsmouth area and let fly but his powerful half-volley was tipped onto the post by the excellent James.

Portsmouth made their second change of the afternoon with Lauren replacing Utaka, before Ronaldo's drive from close range was turned round the post by James for another fruitless United corner.

Then it happened. On 76 minutes, a long James clearance was helped on by Kranjcar, sending Baros through one-on-one with Kuszczak. As the Portsmouth sub tried to take the ball round the Polish keeper, he was brought down and - although Wayne Rooney had raced back and was on the goal-line, the referee not only correctly awarded a penalty but also sent Kuszczak off.

Rio Ferdinand took over in goal but Sulley Muntari coolly sent the ball into the bottom left hand corner beyond the stand-in keeper's despairing dive.

The breakthrough set up a frantic last 10 minutes, United searching for an equaliser with growing desperatuion, Ronaldo sending a dipping free-kick from 30 yards just over the bar, and Anderson cutting in from the right wing but scuffing a weak shot into the side-netting.

But Pompey continued continued to frustrate their hists, and after four minutes of added time the referee blew for full-time to herald a memorable Pompey win. They will now be in the draw for the semi-finals of the FA Cup - and are thus guaranteed at least one trip to Wembley this season.

the problem we had yesterday is no plan B in the most important area of the pitch, for all the options we have in the middle we dont have a different type of striker because saha is just a liability and for once tevez didnt have the best of games which leaves too much resposability on ronny and wayne to always come up with the goals ..

icant believe anyone here hasnt complained about the penalty they got? it was absolut ****ed up, he just slides over him as kuchzak lies down, what a complete load of bullshit. The portsmouth player played hockey instead of footboll at Ronaldo, they didnt even aim for the ball.
