wigan pair?!

Fergie Plots £40m Spending Spree

Big spending Manchester United may be odds-on for the title now, but that won't stop manager Sir Alex Ferguson splashing the cash once more this summer. The Scot has already highlighted four potential signings and is willing to spend £40m.

Wigan Raid Also?

Both stars would likely be involved in this summer's Euro 2008 before linking up with United, but two other targets are far closer to home, however, in Wigan Athletic duo Wilson Palacios and Luis Antonio Valencia. The Red Devils reckon they can force the Latics' hand with a bid of £10m for the pair.

As was the case last season, Fergie seems intent on moving sharply and concluding his transfer activities within days of the window opening so that the focus can return to the football side of things as soon as possible.

Moutinho, Veloso top Man Utd's £40M spree

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is chasing Sporting Lisbon pair Miguel Veloso and Joao Moutinho.

The Sun says the Portuguese midfield duo top Fergie's £40 million shopping list ahead of the summer market.

Old Trafford No 2 Carlos Queiroz has been on scouting missions over the last few weeks to run the rule over Moutinho and Veloso, both former teammates of United stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.

Moutinho, 21, has 11 caps for Portugal and his quick-footed, artistic style is perfectly suited to United. Veloso, also 21, is a more defensive midfielder who can also play as a centre-half or as a full-back. He has five Portugal caps to his name.

Queiroz watched the Sporting players in their Uefa Cup defeat to Rangers last week.

And it is believed that United have first refusal on the young stars but the champions-elect know they will need to shell out around £30m for the pair.

Fergie Plots £40m Spending Spree

Big spending Manchester United may be odds-on for the Barclays Premiership championship title now, but that won't stop manager Sir Alex Ferguson splashing the cash once more this summer. The fiery Scot has already highlighted four potential signings and is willing to spend £40m.

Having had mixed success with both Luis Nani and, notably, Cristiano Ronaldo it appears Fergie is planning to stick to what works best by raiding Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon yet again.

Queiroz The Portuguese Link

A report in this morning's The Sun claims that Lions stars Miguel Veloso and Joao Moutinho top United's wishlist, with assistant manager Carlos Queiroz once again set to be heavily involved in swaying the pair towards a move to Old Trafford.

The Portuguese was in the crowd last week as Sporting Lisbon lost at home to Glasgow Rangers in the UEFA Cup as preparations for a £30m joint-bid reach their conclusion.

Wigan Athletic Raid Also?

Both stars would likely be involved in this summer's Euro 2008 before linking up with United, but two other targets are far closer to home, however, in Wigan Athletic duo Wilson Palacios and Luis Antonio Valencia. both moutinho and veloso are midfielders and we have plenty of players in the field already. unless fletcher or carrick are leaving next season, i dun see why we shld stock up midfielders.
as for the wigan pair, valencia is a good player, but i doubt him as united quality. palacios is another midfielder, although he has adapted well in premiership, i believe it is just pure speculation

I can understand our interest in an attacking midfield player like Moutinho because we've scored very few goals from central midfield this season.

Veloso doesn't make any sense though because we have Carrick, Hargreaves and O'Shea. Anderson has played as DM this season and Possebon has spent some time training with the 1st team.

Not sure about being linked with 2 Wigan players

A full-back and a striker must be on the list too surely?

This seems like the sort of player Liverpool would sign, thats the reason they finish 4th and 3rd constantly. We need better quality.

gotta remember it's in the sun, more than likely rubbish, but dont gorget everyone that veloso can play centre back very well and also left full back
also it is very hard for us to find a player who could walk into our team, we dont need world beaters we've already got em rooney ronaldo tevez rio etc so maybe fergie is just looking for strong young players who can bolster our squad even more :)
