Am I the only one who gets chills every time they're played? Especially when you hear the crowd singing them. I actually learned how to sing the Italian one, just so I could sing one during EURO 2008 as I always sing the Star-Spangled Banner.
Your thoughts? Which country's anthem do you admire? Should the players sing it no matter what? Or is it a cultural thing? Discuss.
i love it when the england fans sing our anthem.the strength that comes from them, should vibrate through the boys..i have tears in my eyes when the anthem is played or sang..
Well i like Mauritian national anthem because of its meaning it great.
England national anthem is great and its true when fans sing it there is something special, French national anthem not bad though.
I don't believe in the queen and God has no power over the Government, let alone us. Hmmm, is that the right or wrong way round?
I join in the national anthem when I attend England games but I don't like it. It's an out-of-date tribute to a monarchy and God that a lot of people in this country have no connection to.
It needs changing. I think it's stupid that England players are criticised for not singing it. People say it's because they are not passionate enough. Perhaps it's because it's a rubbish national anthem!!!
bread of heaven sung at the arms park in the seventies was the stuff of legend . game won before a ball kicked . edwards williams et al grew visibly . springsteen singing star spangled banner and land of hope and glory in 82 at last night of proms also awesome
I wonder how many people in England actually know all the words to our National Anthem. I imagine the majority know the 1st verse...
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.
But I bet only the minority know the rest of it (including me - I had to look this up)...
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen.
I'm not English, I don't believe in God or interesting me for politics. But my favourite national anthem is the English. Especially when the crowd sing it louds at Wembley. The crowd at the Euro '96 was stunning when they sung it extremley loud. And the Rule Britiannia is also pretty good.
lmaorofl I like it Sal red. I don't like God save the queen either but maybe its because I'm Irish and have no time for the monarchy. Land of hope and glory is a much better tune and is less triumphalist
Interesting to read Jamie Carragher's comments in his book- that YNWA had far deeper meaning to him than the anthem. i've noticed its a bit of a northern trait- scholes, Neville, Rooney never sang it either. You are more likely to hear Argentina been sung at OT.
As for me obviously amhran na Bhfiann is my favourite but I also like the Italian , French and the Welsh anthems. The latter sung ar rugby games is simply beautiful
Do you think its because during the refrain, everyone goes "ba dah bum bad duh bum ba da da da da da da" ? Btw, spelling that out was weird, but I rather like Italy's national anthem, I actually learned the words to be honest.
I adore the Italian anthem, I know the first two verses/chorus from memory.
English one sucks.
