Am I the only one who gets chills every time they're played? Especially when you hear the crowd singing them. I actually learned how to sing the Italian one, just so I could sing one during EURO 2008 as I always sing the Star-Spangled Banner.

Your thoughts? Which country's anthem do you admire? Should the players sing it no matter what? Or is it a cultural thing? Discuss.

The English national anthem is crap and pathetic IMO.
A song about a ruler ( who doesn't really rule ) and not
a word about England as a country.

French and Welsh anthems are the best i think.

I don't believe in the queen and God has no power over the Government, let alone us. Hmmm, is that the right or wrong way round? :D

I join in the national anthem when I attend England games but I don't like it. It's an out-of-date tribute to a monarchy and God that a lot of people in this country have no connection to.

It needs changing. I think it's stupid that England players are criticised for not singing it. People say it's because they are not passionate enough. Perhaps it's because it's a rubbish national anthem!!!

National Anthems, a primitive way of brain washing the people. Our country is better then all the others.

Either you are with us or against us.

Definately Irelands it's brilliant:

Amhran na bhFiann:

Sinne Fianna Fáil[5]
Atá fé gheall ag Éirinn
Buíon dár slua
Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn
Fé mhóid bheith saor
Seantír ár sinsear feasta
Ní fhágfar fén tíorán ná fén tráill
Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil
Le gean ar Ghaeil, chun báis nó saoil[6]
Le gunnascréach, fé lámhach na bpiléar

croatian national anthem !
a few musicians said that it was the best they had ever heard
read - and cry ! ;)

Our beautiful homeland,
O dear heroic land,
Our fathers' ancient glory,
May you be blessed forever.

Beloved, you are our sole glory,
Beloved, you are our only one,
Beloved, where there are plains,
Beloved, where you are mountainous.

Drava, Sava, flow on,
Nor you Danube, lose your power,
Deep blue sea, tell the world,
That a Croat loves his people.

Whilst the sun warms his fields,
Whilst stormy winds lash his oak trees,
Until a grave covers him,
Whilst his living heart beats.

I wonder how many people in England actually know all the words to our National Anthem. I imagine the majority know the 1st verse...

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.

But I bet only the minority know the rest of it (including me - I had to look this up)...

O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen.

The English one is horrible! Slovakia has an alright one, and even though there's no words La Marcha Real for Spain is great.

I'm not English, I don't believe in God or interesting me for politics. But my favourite national anthem is the English. Especially when the crowd sing it louds at Wembley. The crowd at the Euro '96 was stunning when they sung it extremley loud. And the Rule Britiannia is also pretty good.

lmaorofl I like it Sal red. I don't like God save the queen either but maybe its because I'm Irish and have no time for the monarchy. Land of hope and glory is a much better tune and is less triumphalist

Interesting to read Jamie Carragher's comments in his book- that YNWA had far deeper meaning to him than the anthem. i've noticed its a bit of a northern trait- scholes, Neville, Rooney never sang it either. You are more likely to hear Argentina been sung at OT.

As for me obviously amhran na Bhfiann is my favourite but I also like the Italian , French and the Welsh anthems. The latter sung ar rugby games is simply beautiful;)
