Sir Alex Ferguson says Gary Neville can secure a new contract at Manchester United.

Neville is in the final year of his present deal and is battling to force his way back into the United side.

The club captain made just one brief substitute's appearance last season, but did start last week's Community Shield clash with Portsmouth.

United boss Ferguson admits Neville will have competition for the right-back spot from last term's first choice Wes Brown and promising teenager Rafael da Silva.

However, Ferguson is confident that the 33-year-old will be doing his utmost to be rewarded with a new deal.
Remarkable

"There will be no problem about a new contract for Gary," affirmed Ferguson.

"He will be up for a new deal, you can be sure about that, because he's a remarkable person.

"The way he has come back after 18 months is remarkable and to then play to the level he played against Portsmouth last Sunday was perfect.

"But it is going to be difficult for Gary to get into the team when you think about what kind of season Wes Brown had last year. Then there is the young lad Rafael da Silva - he's a player."

It maybe time to get the golden watch out and give him a job on the United tours as compare or something 'ambassadorial'. With the twins coming through and Brown already being very good there, shame to say, but the old donkey needs to get made into glue.
