Pele Robbed At Gunpoint
Reports have revealed that Brazilian legend Pele was robbed at gunpoint by a gang of youths earlier this month…
According to the Veja website, the incident occurred on June 13 on the fringes of Santos but Pele did not make any statement to the police.
The 67-year-old was on the way to his beach house when at least 10 young men brandishing knives and firearms stopped his car as it was passing a slum on the outskirts of the city.
Such an occurrence is commonplace in Brazil's more impoverished neighbourhoods, and Pele – who played for Santos for over 20 years – reportedly rolled down the passenger window in an attempt to explain why the youths should not mug one of world sport's most enduring icons.
Such reasoning proved fruitless, it would seem, as the gang robbed Pele of his jewellery, watch and mobile phone before fleeing.
However, Brazilian newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo reported that the thieves returned some of the items after confirming the identity of their victim later on.
