These are usually horrible to watch but since we lost to Arsenal in the
Fa cup in 2005 its been plain sailing.

We have won the last 3:
-Community Shield '07 vs Chelsea.
-CL final vs Chelsea.
-Community Shield '08 vs Pompey.
Do you think we are some kind of specialists? or we just have more bottle? or luck?

Notice Edwin's preparation for the penalties? He takes his time and comes right
to the edge of the 6 yard box, making himself look big and unnerving the
opposition players. I believe it was cos of him we won vs Pompey. He helped
make those players miss imo. Edwin will always go down as a legend for his
penalty heroics.
I would LOVE IT if we played and beat Madrid on peno's this season

Its a great habit to get into and the team gain confidence at taking them while
the opsoition have that in their mind the fact that we have such a good record of
late.

I noticed Edwins set up actually. Calmy walks and just slows everything down to
his pace. Takes his time, sets himself an dthen he's ready. All that with the fact
that he's a huge bloke and it must be a very intimidating site seeing him taking up
the goal in front.

Hopefully we can win more now without having to loose all our nails though from
now on, although it does fill you with confidence to know that we have some
quality penalty takers. My top 5 United penalty takers would be, in no particular
order;

Tevez
Ronaldo
Hargreaves
Carrick
Saha

i think thats a cracking point about edwin, he is becoming abit of a peno master, he dont need to dance like that fat scouser once did he just looks big, but i also think its down to the players if you look at the kicks aginst pompey, you can see the hunger and the calm collectness within them.
with the exception of carricks peno, if you see the peno's on sunday they were just taken like they were training kicks abit like italy did in the world cup.
i think there more about confedance if you have a good keeper who you know will save atleast some then you know there isnt as much pressure on you i suppose.

Saha is actually the club peno taker.

If he's playing an dRonaldo's playing, he'll take the spot kick. Last time was
Chelsea he scored....

Saha doesn't have the right mentality to score a pen. His pen at Chelsea had no pressure, a little but of pressure and he'll mess up.

We are definitely doing well on penalties and Edwin is a big reason for this.

yeah it must be tough for you English....... Ireland lost won against Spain in
2002 and I cried.... We would have gone on to win the World Cup and all..
We won won in 1990 against Romania and I can remember that day like it was
yesterday. Best day ever
But yeah the English have THE worst record in shoot outs in World football.
I cant imagine how depressing it must be to get knocked out of EVERY
tournament on peno's

I wouldnt really trust Saha with a penalty. He just strikes me of a bit of a bottler (celtic away anyone?)

Nani I would be worried about aswell. I know he scored in the CL but if you watch it again it was very, very lucky to have gone in, Czech seemed to palm it in his own goal.

I actually think VDS is very overrated at saving penalties right now. I know he saved Anelka's but he should have also saved Lampards and Cole's pens aswell. Plus Defoes on Sunday was very savable.

Hargreaves is a brilliant penalty taker. Wsn't he the only 1 who scored vs Portugal in the WC?

I seem to remember Sven saying he was our best penalty taker aswell.

hargo is awesome at penalties. The one in the CL final was possibly the best
peno I have ever seen, considering the pressure that was on him.
Fair point about Saha I guess.......He would be way down the list anyway
if we had another shoot out.

Thats what I realized when I was naming my five. I had originally put Rooney there in front of Carrick, remembering when he won the Shootout against Chelsea for the Shield last year. Anderson and Nani were both great in the CL Final as well. And my favorite peno take might be Scholes, like the one he blasted into the roof of the net straight ahead (can't remember who it was against). That isn't even mentioning Carrick who took the last penalty we won. Yes, this is one area, that doesn't concern me at all

I think the reason Hargreaves is so good at penalties is because he lived in Germany for so long, and they never, ever, miss penalties.

When Hargreaves scored that pen in the CL final it was strange because although it was an amazing pen, the commentator was like "ooh just!...just".

I agree with both points, Rooney does make me a little nervous, but i really expect it to be clicking in his head right now, and then he would do fine. He usually shines in big moments, that one against Villa was for a meaningless hat trick when the game was in hand.

And about Scholes, it has been a long time, but I don't think there is anyone I trust more than him with how level-headed he is and the incredible accuracy when striking a ball.
