Just a quick question...

How or what do clubs base a players value on? As surely it can't be a price plucked up out of the blue!

Same as any comodity, something is 'worth' whatever some1 is willing to pay for it, no matter how good the player

also how commercial a player is will be a huge thing to take into account.

lets just contrast kaka and ronaldo.
kaka is a blinding player, so is ronaldo-obviously both one of the best players in the world.
but i bet people would pay more or have a higher evaluation of ronaldo as he will sell more merchandise...(shirts with his name on, random tshirts etc...)

think back to the summer when those spanish ****s were trying to tempt ronaldo.
the amount of sponser, merch money put together over the next 7,8,9 even ten years would probably top that of the actual offer.
thats without taking into account anything actually on the pitch.
footballers are not just normal people anymore, they are marketing tools to get money of fans who will pay out time and again if that player has a big influence on the clubs success just like ronaldo (as mentioned before.)
as blade said, on the pitch stuff such as form etc will make it up too.
