The race for the Golden Boot is hotting up as we reach the finishing straight, here are the contenders:

28: Huntelaar
24: C.Ronaldo
22:Luis Fabiano
21: N'Kufo
20: F.Torres
19: Adebayor
17: Benzema
16: Borielllo
15: Ibrahimovic, A.Mutu

It looks like Huntelaar is running away with it, but don't forget that goals in the dutch league are worth much less points than goals in the stronger leagues, so Huntelaar may not win it. So who will win it?

Its going to be tough, but i'd put my money on Ronaldo or Luis Fabiano. What an accomplishment it'd be for Ronaldo, a winger to win the European Golden boot. No non-striker has ever won it before, right?

how has hunter scored 28 goals in the dutch league. One fo the weakest leagues in Europe: English, Spanish, Italian, French, German and then Dutch. Ronaldo has played a lot more games than has the Hunter anyway.

last i checked Ronaldon was leading the scoring charts. Surely ROnaldo has scorted more. He's scored a few goals in Europe our lad has. What has Hunter scored? 8 goals against a team 3xworse than Derby [potential Dutch league 1 winners there at pride park!].

I need verification on those figures.

Ronaldo fan, you are overreacting a bit:)
Is it that important, the scoring champion?
By the way, PSV just knocked out spurs...

Its only league goals that count and I think some are pretty harsh on the
Dutch League. Its a middle of the range league, and a lot better than some
others. Scoring 28 goals in any league is great work in my eyes.

Quick question.....how do they work out the points in the Dutch league?
Is there some formula used? I mean is Huntelaar still ahead or behind Ronnie?

It is done on a points system.
There are 3 groups. Each depends on the strength of that league. The points each goal is worth depends on how strong the league is.

Strongest group
Each goal scored = 2 Points

Leagues In This Group: Spain, Italy, England,France

Intermediate:
Each goal scored - 1.5 points

Leagues: Dutch, Bulgarian, Austrian, Russia

Lowest:
Each Goal scored = 1 Point
Leagues: Croatian, Welsh, Irish etc

So on this points system, Ronaldo & Luis Fabiano are joint leaders at the moment with 44 Points and Hunterlaar comes in 2nd with 42 Points

You can see last years Table for the European Top scorers:
http://www.uefa.com/footballeurope/news/kind=2/newsid=552524.html

Here is something which is more recent:
http://www.tribalfootball.com/article.php?id=82687

Although this list only goes up to 2005:
http://europeancups.altervista.org/rankings/country ranking 2005.htm

It should give you a good idea on how strong each league is and what points they'd get

I was going to ask about that. A striker who scores plenty of goals in a "minor" league should not beat someone who scored slightly less in a "major" league.

I'd never considered the fact that Huntelaar could grab the ESM golden boot. :eek: I shouldn't discount the smaller leagues. Well points system in mind I thought I'd make it clear for everyone.

C.Ronaldo, Luis Fabiano: 22 * 2 = 44 Points ==> England/Spain coefficient 2

Huntelaar: 28 * 1.5 = 42 Points ==> Eredivisie has a coefficient of 1.5

F.Torres: 20 * 2 = 40 Points ==> England coefficient 2

Adebayor: 19 * 2 = 38 Points ==> England coefficient 2

Benzema: 17 * 2 = 34 Points ==> French League Coefficient is 2

Borriello: 16 * 2 = 32 Points ==> Italy Coefficient is 2

N'Kufo: 21 * 1.5 = 31.5 Points ==> Eredivisie coefficient of 1.5

Ibrahimovic, A. Mutu: 15 * 2 = 30 Points ==> Italy coefficient 2

FFS, the French Ligue 1 is classified in the same league as
Italian Serie A, Spanish Primera La Liga & Barclays English Premiership???
Thier league is an utter crap, and I'll only rate it as on-par with Dutch Eredivisie.

Anyway, I think the Luis Fabiano of FC Sevilla will emerge
victorious in the race for the European Golden Boot.
Last but not least, kudos to our very own CR7, Ronnie.
Seriously, his goal-scoring ratio in every game is simply incredible.
Nvm if he can't win it. Most importantly is that he helps United to
win both Premiership & Champions League trophy.
You hve done all of us proud. Really ue hve!! ;)

The coefficients are worked out by UEFA, so send you letters of disbelief to Platini.;) In the meantime I'll try and explain the ranking system. All of the top five European leagues, Eng, Fra, Ger, Esp & Ita, have a coefficient of 2. Belgium is a strange one, some records say it has a coefficient of 2 others say 1.5, I'm inclined to believe the latter. There are a whole bunch on 1.5, Eredivisie along with leagues like Austria, Turkey, Switzerland, Poland & Bulgaria I think. Then there are the leagues you really feel sorry for with rankings of 1. Wales, Estonia & Strangely enough Croatia. You'd think they'd be 1.5 with clubs like Dinamo Zagreb. As for how they assign rankings wikipedia actually gets it right and explains it succinctly. The ESM Golden Shoe coefficients are worked out based on the leagues ranking in the UEFA coefficients. In other words the leagues ranking is determined by how well that leagues teams have performed in the past 5 seasons of European Competition. So basically yes, European results do matter more than domestic results, at least in determining where a league stands among it's peers. So that's probably why France and Germany have coefficients of 2, with teams like Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen & Lyon, Monaco & Marseille regularly performing in Europe it helps their rankings.
