Man Utd's Rafael out for a month with fracture - England - ESPN Soccernet

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United right-back Rafael Da Silva will be out of action for a month as he recovers from a fractured ankle.

The 18-year-old picked up the injury during United's 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford last Saturday.

The Brazilian has impressed so far this season making 11 Premier League appearances - with just two as substitute - and has scored one goal. The promising youngster has also featured in all five of United's Carling Cup games en route to Sunday's final but is denied his place in the Wembley showpiece.

"Rafael is out for a month with a slight hairline fracture of his ankle," Ferguson said in his pre-match press conference. "It's a blow for the kid because he's been playing in all the games and he's done so well. He deserves to be in the final."

Ferguson has promised youngsters Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck a starting role in the final as reward for their impressive contribution to United's season.

The League Cup could be the first trophy in a unique quadruple success as Ferguson's side remain strongly placed in the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League.

With Brazilian midfielder Anderson and defenders Gary Neville and Jonny Evans returning to the squad United have cover for Rafael.

Ferguson must make a choice over his goalkeeper; with Edwin van der Sar set to be rested the gloves will either be handed to Ben Foster or Tomasz Kuszczak.

Oh for the love of crimony. Does anybody else feel that football injuries are getting worse?

I mean, to me, it feels like injury lists this season have been huge.

Not just for us. For everyone. Compared to maybe 3 years ago it seems bigger.

I've just read this on manutd.com

I feel really sorry for Rafael. He's been brilliant this season and would definitely have started the final if he was fit.

Good news that Neville is fit and Anderson came through his reserve game unscathed though.

As for which keeper to pick I'd go with Foster.

Bad news for him.

He's been great for us this season, and this injury will derail him. Also, he'll miss an important part to the season.

Hopefully for our sake, the others stay fit.
