Police are investigating the alleged rape of a 26-year-old woman at a hotel where Manchester United players and other guests were attending a party.
The alleged attack took place at the Great John Street Hotel in Manchester in the early hours of Tuesday.

Hotel managers confirmed the venue was fully booked out for a private party.

Police are refusing to confirm or deny the involvement of any players in the incident at the city centre hotel but are continuing inquiries.

The hotel is a boutique "town house" hotel converted from a Victorian schoolhouse, situated in the trendy Castlefield area of Manchester.

'Inquiries continuing'

A hotel spokesman said: "We're helping the police with an investigation."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Police are currently investigating a report of rape at a hotel in Manchester city centre.

"[Officers] were called to the hotel on Great John Street to a report that a 26-year-old woman had been raped.

"Inquiries are continuing."

A Manchester United spokeswoman declined to comment.

Police were called to the hotel shortly after 0400 GMT

but I can't help thinking, given the time we live in, that some young girl is just looking for a quick buck, hoping for the case to be settled outside of court......

Police are investigating claims that a woman was raped at a hotel where Manchester United players were having their Christmas party.

Rape claims under investigationThe alleged assault occurred at the Great John Street Hotel in Manchester in the early hours of Tuesday.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating a report of a rape at a hotel in Manchester city centre.

"At 4.15am police were called to the hotel on Great John Street to a report that a 26-year-old woman had been raped.

"Inquiries are continuing."

Officers took three clear bags from the hotel and put them into a police van parked alongside the building.

The hotel has reopened but did not appear to be hosting a large function or party on Tuesday night.

A hotel spokeswoman said: "We did have an event on Monday night. We're helping the police with an investigation. We're currently closed but hoping to open this evening."

Sky's north of England correspondent Tom Parmenter said: "The entire first-team squad, apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, had been out around town celebrating their annual Christmas party.

"It started on Monday lunchtime at a nearby casino where they were entertained by burlesque dancers.

"They then moved on to the Old Grapes pub which is owned by Liz Dawn, the Coronation Street actor."

A number of players then ended up at the Great John Street Hotel.

The problem is there have been to many girls who have not been raped and come up with bullshit stories to try and get money. This has made people doubt any rape story involving a famous person or star, thts not to say it can't happen but the majority of these case's are found to be false. The women who lie about this deserve to spend along time in prison a they are ruining not only the people's lives they accuse but the true victims of rape who are not taken as seriously thanks t the money grabbing time wasters.

POLICE last night arrested Manchester United defender Jonny Evans on suspicion of rape.

The 19-year-old was being held in custody after presenting himself to police following a day-trip to Monaco.

It is believed his day trip to the French Riviera was with a relative and pre-arranged.

He jetted back into Manchester Airport last night - and immediately made himself available for interview.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “Detectives investigating a report of rape at a Manchester city centre hotel have arrested a 19-year-old.

â€He was arrested on suspicion of rape this evening after presenting himself to police. He remains in custody.â€

Evans made his first team debut in a Carling Cup defeat against Coventry in September - and has since played two Champions League fixtures, at home to Dynamo Kiev and away to Roma.

He has also played eight times for Northern Ireland.

Last year boss Sir Alex Ferguson raved about his potential and said: “He's got a wonderful temperament.

Plain-clothes officers visited the Great John Street Hotel, Manchester, again yesterday morning to quiz staff about the party.

Whenever something like this happens the one thing I disagree with is the man's name being released to the public before a trial has taken place.

If Jonny Evans is guilty then he deserves to go to jail and for his promising football career to be over.

If he is not guilty then he does not deserve to have his name tarnished and to be subjected to the inevitable abuse he will now receive on the football field.

Looks like we're guilty until proven innocent in this country - I thought it was supposed to be the other way round.
