Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed Liverpool have made a bid for Gareth Barry.

Reports earlier on Friday had suggested Liverpool had made a firm move to try and lure Barry to Anfield by making an approach to Villa.

Barry is widely believed to be high on the list of Rafa Benitez's summer transfer targets as he looks to build a squad capable of mounting a serious title challenge.

The England international's future has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks with Chelsea also thought to be keen on his signature.

Barry, who has two years to run on his current contract, recently admitted he might have to consider his future at Villa as he wants to be challenging for honours at this stage of his career.

O'Neill confirmed Liverpool boss Benitez had offered a player-exchange for Barry with reports suggesting Scott Carson or Peter Crouch could be included in any deal.

Carson is currently on a season-long loan at Villa Park from Liverpool, while Crouch's future at Anfield is up in the air as he has struggled to hold down a place in the side this season.

It now remains to be seen if the two clubs can strike a deal with O'Neill thought to be interested in bringing Crouch back to Villa Park.

Hmm his versitile like our Hargreaves...and he reminds me a lot of Carrick...they are suddenly buying/interested in british players like Barry and Bentley...how come when ever we go for them they are very very expensive like Rooney, Rio, Hargo, and Carrick but when Poo fc goes for them Barry is cheap at 10m?

O'Neill slams Reds' Barry bid

Villa boss left fuming at Liverpool tactics

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has launched a scathing attack on Liverpool after it emerged they had made a bid for Gareth Barry.

Reports emerged on Merseyside early on Friday that a bid of around Ł14million, which included players - with Peter Crouch and Scott Carson mentioned - had been lodged with Villa for their captain.

O'Neill has now confirmed that a bid has been made by The Reds, but the Northern Irish coach was left seething with how it has come to light.

The news has come out just 24 hours ahead of their crucial Premier League clash with Wigan as Villa are locked in a battle with Everton for fifth place and the only Uefa Cup place available through the league.

"I think that what we had, was that I thought Gareth said he would prefer to wait until the end of the season before discussing things and I think that is right to do so," he told Sky Sports News.

Fury

"It is particularly disappointing to find out that Liverpool, I think, have carried the story in their local paper - it is certainly not the way the Liverpool of old would have conducted business and I prefer to do it in a bit of privacy with a bit of confidentiality and it is disappointing especially at this time with two games to go.

"But they have done their bit by qualifying for the Champions League, which is great, their interest this season has ended and therefore I would rather be waiting until the end of the season, but I suppose there is a point that if Liverpool happened to be listening - he has two years left on his contract and he is not one, in my experience with him, is not one who would break contracts lightly."

Player plus cash bid

O'Neill confirmed a bid had been launched and said it was a player plus cash offer.

"They haven't made a straight cash offer," he continued.

"They have made a mish-mash of nameless players in exchange.

"As I said I am particularly disappointed to find our business being conducted in public.

"I want to be clear, I want to build a club here, we are not a feeder club - we want to try to challenge, at some stage, we want to get to the position that this club once held [European champions] and this demands an awful lot of effort, a supreme effort, and that will take very good players and I don't want to be in the position of letting players, really good players go and Gareth Barry is a really good player who still has two years left on his contract."

O'Neill added that he is yet to talk over the situation with his captain.

"I haven't discussed these things with him - obviously I will do," he continued.

"But the day before our most important game is not the time to be discussing it. I would prefer they would go back to their practice of old when they did business in the proper fashion."

I really hope the Scousers dont get Barry. He is such a tidy player,
and would be a great addition to ANY team. This guy has been a regular
in the England midfield, which has an abundance of great players.
Hope he stays at Villa, O'Neill is getting a good thing going there.
Lots of young English talent that all England fans should want to remain
together. Personally I dont care as long as he doesnt go to Pool :p

Why would pool want him anyway. They need a top class winger and defender, probably a stiker. Not a midfielder?
Maybe they will sell some players like Alonso...and Barry can also play on the wing and in defence and is versitile - something pool don't have and they lack like we have hargreaves and o'shea. They also want Bentley.

I'm so happy, cos today I found my friends....

See, now this is the kind of story I absolutely love reading!

Nothing makes me happier than hearing that Benitez would trade some of his players plus cash for a player who would, at the most, be a squad player at Old Trafford!

Gareth Barry would be better than Fletcher, but I don't see him breaking into the first team. and where would he play?!?'!

Honestly, is there a big difference between Benayoun, Babel, Pennant and Barry?

Maybe Benitez wants to get rid of Pennant, because his name doesn't start with a B. hur hur

Barry could play anywhere across the middle of the Park, but certainly his best positions are CM or on the left. So what's going to happen with Babel?

Is he going to replace Alonso, who has stopped improving and is no longer good enough?

But does Barry have the quality that Liverpool need?!?!

He is a good player, but not a GREAT player and I'm glad that Benitez is still not buying players that could make them great, because their fans are scum and do not deserve it.

agree with u.
barry is no more than a good player. does not have anything special to provide to a championship winning team. just enough for a club of liverpool status, chasing for that 4th spot every season.
he will join pennant, crouch, kuyt, veronin, benayoun, kewell, the collection of liverpool's average players.

Gareth Barry seemed to me like one of those players who was destined to spend most of, if not all of his career at a mid-table side like Villa. I do rate Barry, but as stated before, I don't think he would be a regular starter for us when you look at who we already have at the club.

If Liverpool continue to play Gerrard off Torres then Barry could quite easily slot into the Liverpool side in my opinion.

--*???--Mascherano--Barry--Babel--
--------------------Gerrard---------------
--------------Torres----------------------

*???=new possible singing for Liverpool this summer.

That midfield doesn't look bad to me and speaking as a United fan, I quite hope that LFC don't end up with Barry.
