Real Madrid's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic admitted defeat in his attempts to lure Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu earlier this week and has instead turned his attention to Quaresma as a more viable option to give Bernd Schuster's team some additional width in the next campaign.
However, Atlético have always held an interest in Quaresma and even made tentative enquiries last summer before they were put off by the 25 million Euro price tag that Porto chairman Pinto da Costa attached to his star player.
A number of abject performances by José Antonio Reyes this season have prompted the Atlético hierarchy to begin searching for another winger and they have decided that Quaresma is still the man they want at the end of the season, whatever the cost.
With both capital city clubs in the running, Pinto may decide to play the clubs off against each other in order to achieve a better deal for Porto than would previously have been possible.
He managed to negotiate a 30 million Euro deal with Madrid for Pepe last summer and will be looking for a similar figure to part with Quaresma.
Quaresma himself is thought to favor a move to Bernd Schuster's team, but if Atlético do beat their city neighbours to the punch then he would be happy to join Los Colchoneros.
Whoever wins the battle, he looks certain to be plying his trade in the Spanish capital next season.
Now, I noticed that Atletico Madrid's trying to form a very good side secretly that goes unnoticed. If they managed to sign Ricardo Quaresma, he will join the likes of Diego Forlan, Sergio Aguero, Maximiliano Rodriguez, Jose Antonio Reyes, Roberto Abbondanzieri(Argentina's first-choice goalkeeper), Giourkas Seitaridis, Simao Sabrosa, Thiago Motta, & Luis Garcia.
