Man United defender Rio Ferdinand has singled out the introduction of Wayne Rooney as the significant moment in his sides late 2-0 victory over Aston Villa in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup.

Until Rooney's swaggering cameo, neither side had really looked like scoring in what was a very disappointing game, low on skill, incident or tension.

Rooney's substitution, with 20 minutes left on the clock, at least gave visiting England boss Fabio Capello something positive to take home with him.

Rio Ferdinand was a little surprised by his team-mate's dynamic performance, given that he had been suffering from a virus.

"Wayne is a fantastic footballer with bundles of energy," he said. "He may have missed the last couple of games but he looked very fresh when he came on and I think he was the difference."

Everyone at Man United recognises Rooney's ability to make things happen on a football pitch, even when there is less than a quarter of the game to go.

Even Fabio Capello - in the stands - found words of praise for the Englishman immediately after the game.

"Of course to see a player like Wayne Rooney come on as a substitute in such good form and have a major impact on the game was good for me on my first day," he said.

Am I the only person who has come to the conclusion that Rooney is more important than Ronaldo??
If you look at the games this season where Rooney hasnt played we have pretty much been average to garbage. First 6 weeks of the season couldnt score more than 1 goal in a game and didnt look like scoring, he comes back and we are scoring loads each game. He then has a couple of games out west ham, brum and majority of villa and again we struggle to score

For 70 minutes it was the same as West Ham and Birmingham.....

In other words.....

No Rooney and no magic......!!!!

For the last 20 minutes - WITH ROONEY.......

A totally different team......

They just came to life like someone flicks a switch !!!

Good for today - to get us past Villa......

But I worry now - if he gets long term injury then we have got big, big
problems !!!!

Rooney and Ronaldo are both very important for United.

Rooney has been missing for all 4 of United's defeats this season but Ronaldo was also absent for 3 of those games.

I predicted at the start of the season that Rooney would outscore Ronaldo this season but after Rooney's injuries and Ronaldo's incredible goal scoring run that looks unlikely now.

Maybe next season.

I thought we hve only lost thrice tis season? Also,Wazza's absent for all 3 games while Ronnie's absent for one full game but featured in another....
Yeah, Rooney will get less goals than Ronnie tis season. But mind you,it's not Rooney's deproving. It's actually Ronnie improving. Both are improving at the same time, but juz' dat Ronnie's improvement is simply TREMENDOUSLY!
But there's one thing u can assure of........that's Wazza topping the assist charts this season, and finishing 2nd on the top-scorers list. ;) :)
