Manchester United are sending defender Rio Ferdinand to see a back specialist after he was forced out of their clash against Chelsea on Sunday.

Ferdinand had been all set to make his Red Devils return following a six-match absence, but another back spasm put paid to the England international's availability.

Ferguson has now confirmed the defender will see a back specialist as he is particularly disappointed the 30-year-old was ruled out of the crunch clash against The Blues.

Ferdinand's continued absence meant promising stopper Jonny Evans maintained his fledgling partnership with Nemanja Vidic against Luis Felipe Scolari's side.
Big problem

"He's trained all week and had no issues at all," he told Sky Sports 1.

"This morning he woke up with another spasm. So it's a big, big problem for us.

"This has been going on for a while now. So we're sending him to a specialist (on Monday) to do another scan.

"We're going to have to try and get to the bottom of it because it's a disappointment, particularly in such a big game."

Don't think this will be the last we hear about this problem.
It will be a massive loss if he has to get surgery.

Its just bad luck really. Obviously its a worry cos he is missing, but these back spasms
are few and far between. As the article said, he was fine all week and just woke
up in pain on the day of the match. Its unfortunate but at least we have Evans
and Brown is back in training as well.

Yeah if it stays with a game or two off each season for this problems its not a huge problem but Rio is 30 now and when old men gets the injuries they tend to stay..or even worse...to get worse.

let;s hope everything will be oki..sooner rather than later cause we'll need a full squad if we want to chalenge for the title and the other trophies. Evans is good, but we can't rely on him forever. Not now at least. We need Rio at the back with Vida. Evans needs to learn from them. It's too early to rely 100% only on him. Hope Rio will be fine soon. We need a full squad fast

Rio missing is a problem.

However, I don't feel as worried about it as I should. Missing a player of Rio's ability is a blow of course, but with Evans ability and performances I'm confident that he can do the job.

Of course, I'd prefer to have Rio back but I have complete faith in Evans.

We need this to be sorted out ASAP.

I'm touching wood as I write this, but what if Evans or Vidic get injured?

Don't think about it ..... forget I wrote it. We need Rio back - that's for sure.

hes going to be missed hopefully he will recover soon

don't get me wrong but how much Evan is good our defence/team will never be the same

Rio helps Vida making him better and vica versa also Rio have the captain qualities

rio will be back soon, and its a lot of if's and but's if a few of them are injured.
We still have Brown to come back and OShea can play in there too.
We would want to be VERY unlucky to have more than 2/3 of them injured at a time.

I am sure it is because he is carrying such a big wallet, right?

Honestly, what the hell does his wages have to do with any of this?

But seriously, I hope he gets better for our depth, and so we don't have to hear the inevitable threads like, "Is Rio the new Saha or Hargo?"

No. Its obvious we would miss Evra more, cos he gives us so many more options
on the left than OShea does. For Rio we have quality replacements so its a more
manageable loss really. Evra's didnt look too bad. Looks like he slightly strained
something when crossing that ball in for the goal (and what a cross it was)
or else in the celebration. I have a feeling he wont be out for long, but I havent heard anything on it yet.

yeah, has anyone heard anything on Evra yet? Looked like his ankle, must have been fairly serious to be subbed that quickly....

It's just basically because I've never seen anyone discussing Evra's injury, but perhaps it's because it doesn't look serious as you say.

Hopefully we get clarification soon though, because I always tend to fear the worst when it comes to injuries  :p
