The half-brother of England footballer Jermain Defoe has died after being assaulted in east London.

Jade Defoe, 26, suffered serious head injuries in the attack in Leytonstone, east London.

He was taken to a central London hospital where he died on Friday night, a police spokesman said.

A 28-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident remains in police custody. A post-mortem exam will take place later.

The attack took place about 1700 BST on Monday in Walnut Gardens, near the junction with High Road Leytonstone.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We do not believe a weapon was used during the assault.

"We retain an open mind as to any motive and inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident."

A 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in connection with the investigation.

He was released on bail, but re-arrested on Friday and remains in custody at an east London police station.

Jermain Defoe did not travel with his Tottenham Hotspur team mates for their match with Manchester United on Saturday because of the death.

After getting off the train I went to the City Road Inn, looked up at the TV and was stunned when I saw this news story scrolling across the bottom of SSN. I instantly text my mates saying how something like this puts football into perspective.

My condolences to the Defoe family. RIP.
