Roma have contacted Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre for a return to Serie A.

“I am afraid the situation with Silvestre has been complicated,†revealed Bordeaux director Marius Tresor.

“I met him recently and he told me he had just been contacted by Roma.

“Both clubs are interested in the player, but there is the risk he'll find a permanent transfer to Roma more attractive than a loan to Bordeaux.â€

It would be a return to the peninsula for Silvestre, who flopped in his one year at Inter in 1998-99, making just 18 Serie A appearances.

The French defender turns 31 in August and has been at Manchester United since completing a £3.5m move in 1999.

He can play both centre-back and left-back, so his versatility would be of interest to the Giallorossi.

His fitness could be a concern, though, as he was out for seven months with knee ligament damage and made his comeback in April.

i think the move would be good to him...he's a decent player but unlucky for him we have better selections in our first team squad..i'm sure we'd love him to stay as he provides good backup for our first team, but surely he himself want to play in the first team especially at his peak age...whatever decision he makes we should respect it and thanks for everything he's contributed to the club..

You read my mind with that post mate! Exactly what I was about to say...it would be a good move for him and he has already played in the Serie A with Inter and should know the language but also if he stayed at Old Trafford I wouldn't mind at all as he is good back up for left back and centre back and has heaps of experience. If he does go then for sure we need to buy new wing backs and a centre back to replace Pique and Silvestre

I agree he has been a great servant to the club over the years but i cant say i'd be sorry if he left.
Everytime he was starting i always felt uneasy about him and felt he ws prone to a big mistake compared to our other defenders.

I don't want him to leave. I'm gonna copy a post I posted in the thread about Silvestre going to Bordeaux;

"I would agree that it is not good news.

Yes, when he plays at CB I spend the whole 90 mins worrying. But he is a very good left-back and is very reliable as a no 2, if you like, to Evra.

He is quick, good tackler and actually has a great cross on him.

I hope he stays in all honesty."

But we just got two twins and I belive they are going to be coming to United July something?
Thing is, their only 17/18. And coming from Brazil, they'll probably need a year or so to adapt to the new culture and weather, never mind football.

Silvestre is as good as we're going to get as cover. Some people say we should sell him and buy Lahm as cover.

Do you really think a player of Phillip Lahm's quality is gonna come, sit on the bench and wait for an opporunity?

Me neither.

While it would leave us light at left back, he's been injured most of the last couple of seasons, and has never been brilliant anyway, so perhaps it's time he went?
