It took the late intervention of a very enthusiastic looking United number 10 to snatch victory from the jaws of mediocrity.
After coming on as a late substitute and giving his side just the sort of the shot-in-the-arm they needed to win a desperately poor FA Cup tie at Villa Park, Wayne Rooney heaped praise on Man United's travelling fans, 7000 of whom made the trip.
Possibly stung by Alex Ferguson's comments about the lack of noise at Old Trafford last week, the Reds faithful turned up the volume levels and kept the faith throughout.
"It's a fantastic effort from the fans", said a relieved Rooney who felt that the fans vocal support towards the end of the second half played a crucial part in Man United notching up their 11th straight victory at Villa Park.
"Some teams struggle to fill the away end...but we've filled it again", he added.
Rooney, along with everyone else who watched the match, felt that it was heading for a goal-less draw and an unwelcome replay for Alex Ferguson before Cristiano Renaldo's opportunistic 81st minute strike.
"We knew then the game would open up a bit for a few more chances."
And, needless to say, it was Rooney himself who ended the game as a contest with United's second goal a minute before full-time.
And scoring has clearly helped the frequently sidelined striker feel as if he is now, finally, getting back on track.
"Hopefully we can go all the way this time", he smiled, "it's a boyhood dream of mine to win the FA Cup."
