Man United's Rooney: Liverpool Could Be Third At Best

Premiership Latest

England International Wayne Rooney has dismissed rivals Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League this season, with the Manchester United striker claiming the challenge will come to their crown from Chelsea and Arsenal again.

Reds manager Rafa Benitez saw his Merseyside team record their first victory of his reign over United recently at Anfield, but when questioned on the chances of Liverpool winning the title, Rooney claims that third is the best that Benitez’s team can hope for, with the former Everton player also believing that Liverpool have no real chance of winning their first top-flight title in 19 years.

Rooney said: “I'd like to say no because obviously the rivalry between Man United and Liverpool is massive.

“I think Liverpool have improved on their team again, they have a very good squad now. I think it will be hard for them to challenge the top three. They could be third, which will be an improvement for them, but I still think it will be between ourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal.”

22-year-old Rooney is also adamant that Cristiano Ronaldo has been welcomed back to the Old Trafford dressing room after the summer transfer saga with La Liga Champions Real Madrid. With Rooney believing that by keeping hold of Ronaldo, even when the Portuguese International had declared he wanted to leave for the Bernabeu, United have shown a statement of intent across Europe.

Rooney said: “I think it's been really important [Cristiano stayed].

“It was dragging on over the summer, it was everywhere you went – everything you read or saw on TV was about him going to Real Madrid and I think it dragged on a bit too long.

“Eventually he stayed and all the players are delighted. He's a massive player, one of the best players in the world, and I think it was a big thing for the club to keep hold of him, to show our authority.”
