Antonio Puerta has died three days after collapsing on the field during Sevilla's match with Getafe.

The 22-year-old lost consciousness and fell near his own goal on Saturday, and then collapsed again in the changing rooms.

He was taken to an intensive care unit for treatment and Sevilla later announced he had suffered a heart attack.

Puerta was given assisted ventilation but the Virgen del Rocio hospital said in a statement on Tuesday that he was in a 'very critical' condition.

It has now been confirmed that Puerta, who earned one cap for Spain, has died.

The second leg of Sevilla's UEFA Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, has been postponed.

The game will now be played next Monday.

this is an absolute tradgedy not only did he have a great career in front of him more importantly he had his whole life, so sad,

i heard on ssn that he had fainted twice in last couple of months and he had checkup's and scan's at the hospital and they couldnt find anything wrong with him

maybe our sportsmen and women need more stringent test's, after what happened to puerto.

also there was mark vivian foe, fadiga at bolton, and it happened to the head coach of fc copenhagen, and last night's incident with clarke at leicester

there is probaly more i just can't think of any more of the top of my head!

This is such a tragedy for one so young. I cant believe it keeps happening. There was Marc-Vivian Foe in 2003, Miklos Feher in 2004. Then Puerta died and the Leicester player collapses. I also heard today that an Israeli player collapsed and died as he played a practice match. It seems to be happening more and more often. Another one I saw was a Saudi Arabian player 'killed by the angel of death' as they put it. Some of you may find this disturbing:
