Official - Arsenal Sign Mikael Silvestre

Arsenal have confirmed that the transfer took place this evening, having already awarded the experienced stopper the number 18 shirt.

Silvestre told the official club website upon his arrival at the Emirates, "I’ve spent a large part of my career at United, the last nine years, and I’ll remember that time fondly but feel I’m ready for a new challenge.

"Arsenal is known for playing technical and skilful football, and has a young but experienced squad. I’m really excited about this next stage of my career, hopefully playing my part in helping the Club to new successes."

Manager and countryman Arsene Wenger added, "We have a strong squad but a young squad and Mikael’s versatility, experience and calibre will provide the extra depth we need to reinforce our challenge for honours this season.

"His defensive adaptability will serve us well and it’s a big plus that Mikael has top level experience and a great understanding of football in the Premier League."

Late Approach

The move had the hallmarks of a whirlwind transfer about it, given that until late last night Silvestre's most likely destination appeared to be United's local rivals, Manchester City.

However reports then surfaced that Wenger had a particular fondness for the 31-year-old, who has vast experience of English football after nine seasons at Old Trafford.

Prior to that the versatile stopper had a middling season with Inter, whom he joined from Rennes after three campaigns with Rennes in the French league.

A retired international, Silvestre garnered 40 caps for Les Bleus between 2001 and 2007, winning two Confederations Cups and playing in the 2006 World Cup final against Italy.

Just a good way to get club-2-club relations going so we get a discount on Richards when the time comes.
if we sell him we won't thave cover for LB. O'Shea is played there but I don't think he is such a good LB. We also Fabio who is not very experienced.
Fat hope.

Silvestre is smarter than that. He already rejected a move back home because of the lucrative testimonial match. Why should he now move to Citeh??!
G
Not a chance. Tribal Football? Come on son.
no way we should sell him...he's a good asset to the squad
i want him here, he can be a great sub for us
Silvestre on brink of £750,000 move from United to Sunderland

Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre is on the verge of joining Sunderland in a £750,000 deal.

The French left-back, who has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, is expected to put pen to paper on a £50,000-a-week deal with Roy Keane's side in the next few days.

Portsmouth and Manchester City were in the hunt for Silvestre who has spent nine years and made 249 appearances for United.

Pompey were thought to be unable to afford Silvestre's wages, while the 31-year-old was not keen on playing for United's bitter rivals City.

not everyone can be a legend but its football and everyone has a dif view:D
Silvestre to Arsenal

We've sold him to Arsenal for only £750,000. He's turned down a testimonial to join the Gunners. Apparently they are going to play him as a regular central defender.
He may be 31 now but £750,000 is peanuts for a quality player. Was this a good idea?

Id believe this coz wengers love for french but where did you get this from??
We should keep him. He's very good back up for Evra. If Evra gets injured what would we do then? Play O'Shea? No way! Fabio is still too young, in a year maybem but not now.

We should keep him until his contract runs out.
