Darren Fletcher has been assured he is very much part of Sir Alex Ferguson's plans for next season.

Fletcher was restricted to 11 starts last term, due to the strong competition for places in United's midfield and a knee injury which sidelined him for most of April.

But the Scot's superb two-goal FA Cup display against Arsenal in February demonstrated his ability to rise to the occasion, a trait Ferguson values highly.

The Reds boss told Sky Sports: “He's been very unlucky, but he keeps coming back. He's an important player to us.

“He always plays well in big games – that's the great value he brings to the club. He's a big-game player and we've plenty of big games, so he'll play his part.â€

Fletcher revealed in May that his frustration at not playing every week motivates him to succeed when he does get a chance.

“You have to take disappointment and use it as a fuel,†the 24-year-old said. “If you're not selected then you have to think to yourself ‘I'm going to make an impact if I get on'. You can't let your head get down at all.

“I've picked up injuries at bad times when I've got into the team and started to play well. We have a great squad here and I have to be patient.â€

He was unlucky. It's towards the end of the season when the players are starting to get tired that the squad players get their chance. It must have been very frustrating for him to get injured in April.

Keep Fletcher he is great:)
he shines in all the big matches
he scored twice versus arsenal
and lets not forget his powerful display versus acmilan in 2007 he was one of the best players in that match
this guy can attack and can defence
he plays in the middle
plus he can play on the right
i will be sad if fletcher leaves :(
for me Fletcher > Ronaldo

One of the problems Fletcher has is that he has shown that he is very poor on the right side of midfield. He is much more effective through the centre but that means he has Scholes, Carrick, Hargreaves and Anderson all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Fletcher is a good squad player; one whose need is definitely more than his quality and also shines in most opportunities he is given. Him and O'shea are important to the squad for their simple ability to play in more than one positions. Always helps when you know you have a couple of options at hand for backup’s.

Yeah Fletcher is definitely one of those player, alongside Park, who we're lucky to have considering the amount of time they spend on the bench.

P.S. Spellbound I'm a massive Ronaldo (Brazilian) fan so we're probably going to clash over your sig. :D Just letting you know. ;)

After all I'd take a fat & aging Ronaldo over plenty of strikers even with his knee problems. In my mind he is & always will be the greatest striker ever.

dlan, what makes you think im not a fan of Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima?
I remember him when he was picked for the World Cup squad and sat on the bench when Brazil won the WC. Later he moved to Holland to play for PSV, that was the first time I ever heard of him. Must be 1994.
They said he's way better then Romario and a new version of Pele. All was true he was the best at his time. Look at his merits and it shows how good he was. Three back to back World Cup finals and he won two of them and the one 1998 he was...ehm...ill. And his amount of goals. He beat Gert Mullers record of 14 goals in 2006 WC by scoring his 15th.
I must say his glory started to wither in 2002 when he sat and cried on the bench when Inter didnt win the lo scudetto and he told about his love for the club and a few weeks later he walked the same road as Roberto Carlos did...moved to Real Madrid. The rest is history.

And this is my last day at work before my summer holiday. So all the clashes have to wait another 5 weeks. I cant be bothered now. Life is so beautiful.:)

Back to topic...

Every successful team needs a few Fletch, Park and O'Shea. Thats why its great he's loyalty have paid off if/when he's given more time on the pitch and is told he's in SAF's plans for the future.

Darren Fletcher is garbage. How everybody can come on here with a straight face, and say he is good enough to play for United are having a laugh.

He has played well in a few big games. Wow. He sits out most of the season and anybody in his shoe's would shine when given an opportunity against the big sides.

For a club that has produced Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Neville etc. We produce FLETCHER. Fergies love child.

I know I have gave him a bashing but everybody has there personal hate & he is mine.

Tbh that post at the top of the page is a joke.

Fletcher is a great player to have in the squad. He has shown in recent years that he is definitely good enough to play for Manchester United, and especially in the big games he performs to a high standard. His passion and commitment is without question

By certain supporters though (^) he is always made the scapegoat if/when we lose because its easy to. Hes not the highest profile player, so it must be his fault, which is a complete joke tbh.

We need players like Fletcher, O'Shea, Park etc who are willing to wait for their chance and perform admirably when they come in. I mean Park, for example, imo, was certainly in the top 5 best performers we had the last couple of months of the season. They are the unsung heroes of the squad.

I certainly would keep him, and he is certainly a great player to have in the squad.

fletcher has done well for us when they need him to step up, hes always running
and creates havoc for oppositions midfield. He has helped united to be a strong squad , fergie has put him in a very crucial times over the years and he's come through. I dont doubt fergies eye!

You are an idiot.

Did you even watch him play last season? He was just as good as anyone else on the pitch almost every time, especially in the big games. If United replaced Fletcher with a big name then that person would expect to play a lot and be paid a lot. Fletcher is the perfect fringe player, alongside John O'Shea. He loves the club and won't leave, doesn't' demand huge pay cheques, doesn't mind not playing often and can rise to the occasion when needed. The reason United is so successful is because of players like these.

Fletch started 11 times last season...the question of whether he will be more involved next year........hmmm with Scholes, Owen H, Ando, and Carrick I think even the most ardent Fletch fan would agree Fletchers game time will be limited.
So basically the exact same set of midfielders United had last season?

Exactly, but what I would add is the season before as well.

He has done a great job for us the last 2/3 seasons and certainly deserves, and is certainly good enough, to play for us.

As have I.

People may call me biased, but I've always been a fan of Fletcher and never doubted him.

And I'm glad to see that the majority of supporters has now turned into a minority.

I'm delighted for Fletch tbh.
