Ferguson on Fletcher
By Adam - 05/03/2008 04:47
Alex Ferguson gives his reasoning for playing Darren Fletcher ahead of Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves and Dong Fangzhou last night...

"He emerged from the Arsenal game with great credit, Darren always has a good game against Arsenal, but since then he has come into the frame in many ways. It was a big decision for me tonight because Paul Scholes's performance at Fulham on Saturday was vintage Scholesy. Leaving him out was a major decision because he is probably one of my all-time favourites at this club. He was in vintage form on Saturday and leaving him out was a killer for me.

"Had the game been tomorrow I would have played Scholesy, but he is just finding his way back after a few months out injured. Luckily we have Darren and I would not have liked to have played against him. He is not easy to play against, he closes down so quickly, he stretches to intercept and he wins the ball without conceding fouls. That was important for us tonight given Juninho's ability from free-kicks
a great description - he wins us many balls without conceeding fouls !

I tell you what hes good in the big games.
Just like the commentators said last night on itv when hes played the aggregate score when hes on the field is 12-1 i think so 13-1 now.
And look at his appearences for scotland i believe hes underrated.

He deserve all the praises he got. After for so long being with us, he finally have the best season in his career so far and finally proved why we do still need him in our squad. The way he pester the hell out of the opponent player..It caught me thinking, why didnt he do it way earlier in his career, he wouldnt have been called a squad player then. Am happy for him especially after all the critism he got, as i said he deserve the praises with the amount of hard work he put in.

he deserves every amount of praise he is getting....i'm sure many were sceptical about his abilities and SAF keeping him in the team(which includes me!)...he has proved all of us wrong....he is doing his best and now he is a contender and not just a sub for the centre of midfield

i believe it was something like this - he was great last season - really showed his improvement - then at the beggining and for the most of this season he 's been underused thus unable to show his potential - i have always said - give him a good run of games and he'll prove his worth - and voila ! there he is - shinning like a star ! ;)

That goes without saying...it happen everywhere not only here:p ..we cant stop them from doing that but we can hope that only Fletcher can shut the hell out of them. The thing is, people need to understand the term squad player and what their role is. Like you said miso, all they need is a good run of game but being the squad player they already are, how many games can they get?

Look at it this way, against Lyon...who were the players that was so called rested for the fulham game and who were the players that i would say went underpar against Lyon? I dont think the players that got rested played that really well and that is only them missing a game. My point is, people expect too much from our squad players that at times it is almost as good as ridiculous when they didnt really get to play week in and week out.

true - and not only that - people often get confused with player's duties - so for example they will say that fletcher is useless because he can't dribble like ronaldo and hasn't got the goal per game ratio like ronaldo - but then again they won't slate ronaldo for not having the ability to tackle like fletcher , to perform in big games like fletcher, and to wipe oponent's best players of the field like fletcher. some of them have begun to slate hargreaves for doing only defensive work - well makelele has been doing it for almost a decade now...fletcher's work is to hunt their players down and what i've noticed recently is that he often goes surging forward to get himself a position to score with either head or foot

LMAO!! So true! ( boy i miss this kind of conversation with you ;) )

Thats why i said, people expectation is too high and this need to change. How can one compare the mighty Ronaldo to the "timid" Fletcher. The thing with Ronaldo is, people including our rivals expect big things from Ronny so the amount of attention he received is beyond words while Fletcher, i dont think the rivals players rate him as much ( well maybe they started to do so now ) for all we might not know, they might be surprise at what he could do. Fletcher is improving his game thoroughly and at time from being in the middle i can see him ended up being on the wing  and his workrate is unquestionable for now. Im not saying he is already at his best and that we are being excited too early but all im saying is the improvement is there for everyone to see and for that alone he deserved to be talk about.( in a good way of course):D

i've been saying he is good enough for united for seasons now, no one else has seen his potential. Look how he does for scotland, he is a fantastic player and the only reason he doesn't start is because of the other world class players at united that are keeping him out of the team.

I have to say that in the past I was critical of Fletcher and did not think he was good enough for Man Utd. But he is one of the most improved players I have seen, he has clearly worked hard on his game. I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of some his passing. He was our best player against Lyon and was also excellent against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

ermmm would Terry get into our team ? I dont think so. so he's rubbish ?

Plus Fletcher isnt a regular for us either so I cant see your logic here.

At the moment Darren is making it hard for SAF to leave him out. He's plaing the sort of football we've seen him play for Scotland. He's flying into tackles, winning balls and giving everything he's got. I hope he can keep it up and move onwards and upwards
