Manchester United hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he never intended to leave the club, despite a number of attractive offers from elsewhere…

The 35-year-old will play one last time at Old Trafford as the club commemorates his 11-season United career with a testimonial match against Espanyol on August 2.

The Norwegian was forced into retirement last year after succumbing to a series of knee problems, but he has stayed on at the club and is set to step in as United's reserves coach next season.

Renowned for his exploits as a super-sub, many were surprised the ‘Baby-Faced Assassin' never left the Red Devils in search of more starting opportunities.

But Solskjaer insisted he was loath to leave the club and the manager that gave him his big break, although he admitted there were occasions when a move seemed imminent.

Good Fit

"I never fancied going," said Solskjaer. "The only time it was even an issue was when the club accepted a bid for me from Tottenham in 1998.

"I went to see the gaffer but he said 'I didn't accept it, I want you here and you will play a big part in my squad'. I just thought that is good enough for me I will stay.

"My agent was not very happy with me because I was so stubborn but nowadays even he admits I was right.

"The thing is, Manchester United always fitted me quite well. And I will be remembered as an important member of the team during a period when Manchester United has been very successful.

"I can see now that I will always be in the history books. That makes me very proud."

It would seem not everyone at United shares the former Molde man's unequivocal devotion to the club, however, as Cristiano Ronaldo continues to toy with the possibility of moving to Real Madrid.

But Solskjaer refused to get drawn into the debate regarding the Portugal winger's future, saying: "I have an opinion on Cristiano but it is not my business to talk in public about it."

The word Legend is used to descibe players far to easy nowdays but if one player comes very bloody close to being a United "legend" then it's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He's always been more than a "player", he's a MAN ( in capital letters) who has a RED heart.

I don't think he realised just how much of a "big part" he would play at United.
No need for me to remind any United supporter of anything, you've all seen it and read it a hundred times over.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaers' name is written in RED in Uniteds history books and he has
every reason to be proud of what he has achieved.

The right choice was made. Look how important he went on to be....the famous injury time winner at the Nou Camp that cemented his place in History.
Has been one of my favourites ever since he first came to United.

the baby faced assasin , top man top player, legend forever
respect ole
I read somewhere that Ole doesn't like that nickname.

I think it sums up Ole fully well, when - questionned on SSN - he said his best moment was his kid remembering him as a player when he was walking off the pitch after scoring two goals. Not the 1999 final goal.

So unselfish.

i remember reading that United had accepted an offer for Solksjaer as they couldnt guarantee him 1st team football and was gutted as usually the player accepts he is no longer needed.

BUT Solksjaer turned Spurs down and from that day forward, he was a legend in my eyes!!! United through and through

My understanding of the Spurs situation was that when Yorke arrived, United had an offer for Ole that they though was good enough to sell him. The two clubs agreed a deal but Ole turned it down and the rest is history.

More players should show the type of loyalty to their club as Ole has done to United. A true role model professional.
