The strength of Chelsea's squad is very impressive and could see them nick the title from Manchester United this season.

All across their squad they have internationals fighting for places.

Especially in midfield, I will have to reluctantly admit that Chelsea has the best midfield in the English Premier League.

While they have the likes of Michael Ballack, John Obi Mkael, SWP and Florent Malouda who are not automatic starters and who tussle for first team places, we have Darren Fletcher and even occasionally use John O'Shea in midfield.

Our squad players are not really in the same class are they?

While I really John O'Shea and think he is a hero for scoring that goal at the Kop end in 06/07, he is not in the same quality bracket as the Chelsea squad players are.

John O'Shea is a defender who has been asked to player all over the park for Manchester United and he does a good job, but Man Utd need more strength in depth to stay in front of Chelsea.

Roy Keane said as much this week when he said that the signing of Dimitar Berbatov would give Man Utd a real chance of retaining the title.

I happen to agree.

It doesn't have to be Berbatov, but just about any tall centre forward of quality.

The reason being that we first of all need someone in that mould, but secondly, it would give us the possibility of playing different formations and match Chelsea's first team.

While we might not have Chelsea's strength in depth, I'd say that our first team could match theirs, so it is very important for our first team players to avoid injury.

With Louis Saha's fitness currently nothing more than a cruel joke and Wayne Rooney not managing a full season in the past few years, it is really important for us to get a tall, strong centre forward.

With a tall, strong centre forward of genuine quality, we could potentially play our best line-up, which would see Ronaldo and Rooney play on the shoulders of the centref forward when attacking. They would then drop back to the sides when defending to stop any attack on the wings.

The reason we would need that is because I see the left wing position as an area that needs improving and Nani is still developing.

This is the best line-up I'm hoping for this season:

Berbatov

Rooney - - - - - - - - - - Ronaldo

Scholes - - - Carrick

Hargreaves

Evra - Vidic - Ferdinand - Brown

van der Sar

I realize that this would omit Tevez, but I'm just not sure how to play him. I'm guessing in Ronaldo's absence, Tevez could play in his position.

Also, if Rooney does get injured, Tevez could play in his positions.

I think this is would be a team that could beat any opposition in Europe, but is imperative our first team stay fit, so that Chelsea's superior squad strength does not becaome a factor.

Id agree with you there to be honest. Chelsea's squad is full of class and
experience. We have more up and coming youth though which will hopefully
prove decisive. The likes of Nani and Anderson need to step up though,
as well as Rooney, Tevez and co.

If we dont sign Berba or a striker then Chelsea are favourites for the title imo.
They came SO close to everything last season and yet they never got into
5th gear, which is scary. New manager, new players, new determination.....
They were also unlucky last season with injuries, ACON etc....

It will be VERY hard for us to retain these trophies this season.

I'm not too worried actually.

They don't have as strong a team spirit, and our squad is top quality, whether Chelsea's is better or not.

We do need another striker, hopefully someone like Santa Cruz, and hopefully Manucho gets his work permit, then our squad would really be complete imo.

P.S - Sorry, but I've got to disagree with you about the formation. We've always got to play 4-4-2 at home, playing 4-3-3/4-5-1 away in Europe and occasionally away in the Prem. In the Newcastle thread, I said we could play 4-3-3 only because of our lack of wingers just now. But as soon as we have an adequate number of wingers, we need to play 4-4-2.

I don't agree with the assertion that Chelsea have a stronger midfield; maybe they are stronger in the literal sense, but I certainly don't think that their players are superior. Nani, Scholes, Giggs, Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Anderson, Carrick, Park - all absolutely top class.

they have a way stronger squad than us
Marty, I have known you (through your posts) for about 6 months now, and I have become accustomed to your somewhat 'glass is half empty' view of the world. But you are completely over the top with this comment...sorry.

There is NO WAY that Chelsea's squad is WAY stronger. I suppose it could be argued that they may be equal to us in talent - especially going into the start of this season (player absences). But there is simply NO WAY I would trade our squad for theirs.

Would anyone else?

I'd agree with you that I prefer 4-4-2.
I was just trying to figure out we could pack MY fave starting 11, because Nani is our best left winger at the moment, but I think he needs some time to really blossom and become consistent.

Also, I really like Scholes, Carrick AND Hargreaves and found it too hard to break up that trinity :)

I won't bother listing a 4-4-2 line up, because The Manc did such a good job in his post.

I'm really hoping Carrick continues to stay fit. We don't really have a replacement of his calibre.

I would say Ballack and Lampard are very similar and that Essien and Mikael are similar.

Think it will be harder for us to replace carrick or Hargreaves should they get injured.
Of course we have lots of players in that position, but not necessarily like for like.

^ Yeah, all our CM's offer something different, as opposed to Chelsea's Midfielders. With Chelsea's it will be about whi is playing the best, wheras our selection will probably be a bit more tactical since all our CM's have different strengths and weakness'.

NFT.
It could have so easily been the other way round.
Width of a post and a couple of points....If Heskey hadnt scored vs Chelsea
and Tevez (for example) didnt score vs Blackburn then it would be a very
different scenario.
There is barely anything between the 2 squads.....and remember we played
very well last season.
Chelsea rarely got out of 4th gear, yet they nearly won the lot.

tbf I think we weren't at our best either last season.

Tevez was only at 80%
Tevez and Rooney didn't actually get that much time together
We had 4 new players
Anderson was unfit
Vidic was out at an important time for us.
We only had 2 strikers
We had some crappy refs towards the end of the season.

Man, you;re absolutely right.

Our second team is very good too, but maybe just a little less quality than Chelsea's, but just by an it'sy little bit.

Plus Giggsy is getting a bit old.
