Zenit: £19.7Million Or No Deal

The Arshavin saga has been as prominent as any other transfer story this summer, with the player's performances for Russia at Euro 2008 alerting many clubs across the continent to the talent of the 27-year-old.

His domestic club saw an opportunity to cash in on their star and placed a prohibitively expensive price tag of £25million on his signature.

Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur have stayed the course throughout summer negotiations, and the Premier League club are currently in pole position to secure a deal.

Arshavin himself is thought to favour a move to Camp Nou, and is reportedly furious at the manner in which Zenit have conducted business. He has stopped short of accusing his employers of pricing him out of a move.

Last week, Zenit lowered thier asking price by a significant degree in the hope of attracting a substantial offer, and have now added a deadline to their £19.7million valuation.

Agent Dennis Lachter told Sky Sports of the impending round of negotiations that may see the Russian become a Spurs player by the end of the week.

He said: "Zenit asked for £19.7million for the transfer of Arshavin. This is the last price of the team. Four days ago in a private meeting with one of the Tottenham representatives, it was take it or leave it, that is the last price.â€

No Deal

Andrei Arshavin could have joined Arsenal if he had not demanded too much money, according to the player's agent.

Arsenal were linked with the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker at the start of the summer as the Russian impressed at Euro 2008.

North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have since been mooted as the Premier League team most likely to sign Arshavin.

Inter Milan and Barcelona have also shown interest in the schemer, but Arsenal had been a possible destination for the 27-year-old.

However, Arshavin's agent Dennis Lachter claims his client wanted too high a salary to agree to a move to Emirates Stadium.

ZENIT CLOSE DOOR ON ARSHAVIN SWITCH

Zenit St Petersburg claim to have closed the door on Andrei Arshavin's proposed transfer to Tottenham.

The 27-year-old forward had been keen to play for Spurs following a conversation with Juande Ramos but a fee was not agreed with the Russian club, who originally wanted upwards of £20m.

Spurs were understood to have moved on to other targets as they look to replace Robbie Keane who has left for Liverpool, while Dimitar Berbatov has handed in a transfer request.

A statement from Zenit read: "According to agreements, the club (Spurs) had until August 18 to send their proposals. So far these proposals have not been received.

"Given the deadline has expired and the uncertainty of the situation does not allow the club to find a replacement for Andrei Arshavin, Zenit considers the possibility of transferring the player to Tottenham closed."

Spurs were linked with Spartak Moscow's Roman Pavlyuchenko, Arshavin's Russia team-mate, earlier in the summer but the striker is unsure if he is going to move.

"I can't say anything concrete, since I don't really know myself [the situation]," Pavlyuchenko told Sport Express.

"Everything is still being discussed. Maybe Spartak have already made a decision, but I haven't decided one way or the other.

"Moreover, the transfer to England which everyone is talking about, would be a big problem for my family, as we have a young child. So we need to discuss it properly."

Why do (Spurs) have to wait to see 'if' sale off Berbatov happens before they sign Arshavin, they have sold one part of their best ever striker partnership in Robbie Keane and a great solo striker at that. Ok I know they have spent alot on new signings this summer though they have recouped all that back so if the difference really is as you have stated just 3mil Euros then pay the Bloody money Tottenham and lets get this season started. Did the game yesterday tell you nothing, they need a strike force and a new DM and on that play their best players available and in position at all times there is no such thing as an easy game in the PL Senor Ramos.
