This kid is a massive prospect. A lot of kids have come and gone, been sold
or let go, but I think this lad has a good chance of making it.

With Silvestre gone, he is first choice back up centre back (assuming Wes is at RB)

He is about 8/9 years younger than Rio so if he sticks around United long enough
he might get a chance eventually, especially if Rio or Vida get injured.

Ive watched him playing for N.Ireland as well and he has been outstanding
for them in his 10 or so caps. He's a young lad but very confident on the ball,
very tough and loves to get stuck in. When he bulks up a bit more he will
be a greta player.

Anyways, do you think he will have a chance at United? or will he follow the likes
of Pique and Silvestre out in search of more football?

In his last game for Northern Ireland he had a great game by all accounts.
I love reading articles like these when a player has a great game at
international level no less.

United kid 'outstanding'

21/ 8/2008

JONNY Evans was outstanding for Northern Ireland as they held Scotland 0-0 at
Hampden Park last night.

United youngster Evans brilliantly shored up the defence as Nigel Worthington's
10-man side kept their first clean sheet of the manager's reign.

Evans has been mainly utilised at left-back by his country but the 20-year-old was
quick, strong and accomplished in his timing alongside Stephen Craigan as the
Northern Irish held firm.

"Friendlies are a bit different, but it was good to be playing centre-back, it was
only my second time for Northern Ireland," the Manchester United player said.

"We were here to do a job and it's a good platform to take into the qualifiers.
Going away from home and keeping a clean sheet, if that was a qualifying match
we would have got a valuable point.

"You always get the work-rate with Northern Ireland but with that system, we
worked really, really hard.

"With the two wide men and David Healy playing up on his own - he worked his
socks off. I don't think he has that much match-fitness, so it was a credit to him.

"It's unfortunate he missed the penalty but he has got that many goals for
Northern Ireland, I don't think it matters."

Cannavaro is a short centre back and he has been one of the best in the business
for a decade or so....

Wait hang on  Evans is about 6 foot tall right? Im pretty sure he is,
which blows your argument out of the water Abo ;)

allot of Short CB are good but i don't like to have a short CB
i prefer Vidic/Rio/Knight/Laursen/Stam tall 188+
Evans is 183-185 and he don't have that strong body that others defenders have
he don't have the same strength that my fav. defenders have
but hes good tackler and also fast :)

He does have a chance, no doubt

Not 100% sure if he will make it though. He's up against stiff oposition too so it will be interesting to see how he responds to the task at hand.

But he's only what 20? He hasn't even stopped growing naturally yet not to mention getting bigger by working on the weights.

Rio never used to be what you'd call a big, strong defender.

 people stop getting taller at 18 ;)
and yeah agree about Rio early beginning he wasn't that tough but you have to respect the hours he used spend in the gym when he was young

Abo....sometimes it's best to know when to admit when we have spoken too soon or were misinformed about something :)

It's a great way of admitting you said/wrote something which was incorrect, without being wrong. Instead of you being wrong, the information you had was wrong :D

Anyway, this young man, Jonny Evans, has the physical attributes, positional awareness and according to all sources the right mind-set to being a very good centre back.

The fact the Sir Alex has been willing to let Ryan Shawcross, as well as Gerard Pique says alot about his faith in Evans.

Based on what I've seen, he is already a good defender and can only get better.

I've not seen him play badly once, although I can remember him being nutmegged by somebody in pre-season. I think it could have been Jermain Defoe during the friendly in Nigeria.

Other than that, he seems to position himself well and be more mobile than Pique.
Based on what I have seen, I would rather put him in at CB than Wes Brown.

The only factors that he needs to work on is bulking up and gaining big match experience. The latter is something he has to earn and something Sir Alex will have to entrust him with.
