think personally Rooney from next season on should be deployed as a central striker preferably in the hole.He needs to be involved in the action to get gthe best out of him as an individual even if the self sacrifice h makes in tracking back is just as vital for the team. I think if fergie buys a striker who can actually stay fit unlike saha we will see more of the 442 set up that suits rooney's attacking game. We saw tonight how effective he was in linking up with gerard in particular in that position. I still think he has had a very good season and as our talisman we cannot do without him. So in Europe i still believe that despite winning the champions league we can adapt to a more attacking format a la how we play in the Premiership then we will see Rooney at his imperious best alongside another striker.Tevez would be ideal but no harm having a bit of competition which we didnt have in the striking for virtually the whole season. Still whatever system we play Rooney's enthusiasm for the game remains undiminshed which is admirable and his unselfish play for the greater cause deserves as much recognition as anybody over the course of the season just gone
I agree with that, except I would prefer it if somehow we kept Rooney and Tevez upfront together because I just love the partnership and I know that it could turn out to be incredible. The middlesborough goal would be the norm for the these two if they get a chance to grow as a partnership. There 1-2 link up play has been brilliant this season, so imagine a fitter Rooney, a fitter Tevez, and the benefit of having a pre - season together, they really could be a dream pairing.

They could be better tha nthe Cole-Yorke partnership given time I feel because they are vastly superior individually, but if they can fulfil there potential as a duo then we could see something special.

As a few people have said in another thread, neither Rooney or Tevez were fully fit this season, and when they were they only had a few matches of just the both of them back to back. They could be immense and i would like it if they stay as the front two, but interchange more so Rooney is in the hole just as much as Tevez.

I wouldn't be suprised if Fergie brought a 'low key' striker, just to complement Rooney and Tevez, instead of buying a player who would expect to start every match.

It's gonna be a very interesting season next year i feel.

well said mate I think the partnership will be even better next season and yes they are better footballers than cole or yorke without a doubt. Fergie may not even buy a striker next season if he can get a work permit for manucho and who knows hang on to the balsa man for another season. Campbell or wellbeck may well get their chance and its safe to assume that none of these players will sulk at not starting therefore the spirit of the squad will not be adversely affected.

really do think we'll be stronger next season whilst chelsa and arsenal will be weakened so roll on next August:)

rooney and tevez are better footballers than cole or yorke but are not better goalscorers and that is what this utd team needs somebody to finish the moves off.a quality goalscorer will score 40 + goals a season for this team , if it were'nt for the brilliant ronaldo we might have finished the season potless.
you can't expect a wide player to score that amount a season ,we need a striker that can do it . rooney or tevez will never get near that amount they are more footballers than finishers as you rightly stated.

Rooney needs to b a striker. When we bought him he was raw talent. He scored a few in the euro's. scrored a hat-trick against fernebache. He needs to get back to finishing. He has sacrificed his stardum for the team. He should b what ronaldo is now. Its time to hit 25-30 league goals a season. After all, he will b here 4 years 2 come. unlike others?

i notice, ronaldo scored most goal in this season because United dont have a strikers.....What i mean is tevez and rooney likes to play in the wing.......and ronaldo have the advantages etc. height, strength, power header.....that's why he scored really many many amazing goal.......but he's dribbling skill and individual efforts are just speechless......But this is just my opinion........maybe if manucho got a chance this season to make his debut......surely more goals from header could be made.............sorry if you do not agree with opinion......but if santa cruz made it to Old Trafford......Something big gonna happen.....ManUtd gonna have a different squad next season........................I love transfer windows................

I HELD BACK ROONEY, SAYS FERGIE

SIR Alex Ferguson has held up his hands and admitted: “I've held back Wayne Rooney.â€

Rooney has toiled with England in recent seasons and has not been as prolific for Manchester United as many people expected.

But Ferguson conceded he exploited Rooney's willingness to play anywhere for the good of the team. “I have to take a bit of responsibility for it,†said Ferguson as he watched Rooney training in preparation for his substitute's appearance in last night's tour match against Orlando Pirates, which United won with a goal from Lee Martin.

“Wayne has sacrificed himself and never complained about it, which says a lot for the lad.

“He will score goals. He scored a couple against Aston Villa last October after not scoring for seven or eight games and I thought that would have catapaulted him into a good run. But we kept using him in different positions. We need to define his role better.â€

Louis Saha's endless injury problems meant United battled to domestic and European glory without a defined leader of the line. Rooney was often the fall guy, asked to play in wide areas when, as Ferguson admitted here, his best role is through the middle. “His best position is either the front role or tucking in just behind,†said Ferguson. “He can play either role very well.

“He is aggressive, two-footed, has good pace and the courage to go in the box. There's no reason why he can't get a good supply of goals.â€

While Cristiano Ronaldo was on his way to plundering an astonishing 42 goals and was often used as a central striker, Rooney had to take a back seat. But he never complained about doing the less glamorous jobs that were vital to the team's success.

“We played him wide and in other positions at times,†said Ferguson. “Even in the Champions League final he was doing well, then, when Chelsea got control in the second half, we had to stem that and play three midfield players.

“Once we did that, we controlled the game again. There are lots of occasions when we need to play three midfield players. At home we can play 4-4-2 with the wide players Ronaldo and Nani. Park will be back. There is competition in that position and that makes it difficult for the style we've always played.†Ferguson is bent on bringing Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov in from Tottenham and clearly believes he can help Rooney realise his full potential.

“Wayne may have benefited from having someone with more experience with him,†he added.

“That always happens with young strikers. At 22, he was never going to be the finished article. You don't sign finished-article players at 18. We signed him for his potential, which is why we paid £26m for him. It's for the long view. In a few years' time we will be saying that's really brilliant business.â€

Rooney has been criticised for being ill-disciplined on the pitch and looking a little weighty in pre-season, but Ferguson prefers to pinpoint his player's many positives. “Great credit to the lad, he never complains,†added Ferguson. “If a player moans you would have to review the situation, because it does happen that some players know what their best position is and they don't want to challenge themseles in another position.

“Rooney is prepared to challenge himself in another position. He would play centre-half.â€

I think that if you play Rooney behind a main striker, then that is when he is at his best. Wayne has the ability to play anywhere on the park, but it doesn't mean he should. There are many stories of him offering his services as an emergency centre half as well as playing in goal for training sessions. The passion he has for the game means that he will do what he sees best for the team, and not necessarily what is best for him.

Rooney's finest games for United and England have usually involved him playing as the second striker. In Euro 2004, Rooney played just behind Michael Owen and was at times almost beating teams on his own until his unfortunate metetarsal injury. Likewise for United, Wayne in my opinion has looked far more menacing when playing just beind a main striker.

Think back to classic Rooney performances:

v Fenerbache September 2004: Wayne's debut for United and the day he showed the world why United were prepared to pay £27 million for him. A stunning hat-trick with an all round terrific display. Wayne was playing just behind RvN.

v Bolton October 2006: After not hitting the back of the net for a while, and having the media on his back Wayne hit back in the best way possible. He scored another terrific hat-trick to cast aside all doubts and help United to a comfortable 1-0 win. Wayne played just behind Louis Saha.

Play Wayne behind another striker and I believe you will get the best out of him.

in 2005/2006 rooney was the best rooney, cuz of his position BEHIND RUUD
in that season i remember him leading the play scoring and assisting allot of goals for ruud
what a great season it was
but after ruud left wayne became a test rat for fergie
fergie tried every position for wayne
and wayne dont complain about it.
the last season rooney have played as a winger many times and he didnt play good their
so please fergie get rooney back to his favourite position A CANTRAL FORWORD or buy a mark man so wayne play as a second striker

It's all true.

The position he's been playing is something I've highlighted here:
http://manutd-talk.blogspot.com/

:D

Wayne has been played on the left too often, while Giggs was roaming around in the middle. Wayne is so talented and so commited to the cause that he would play anywhere Sir Alex asked him too, but he was his best when he played behind Ruuf or Saha.

At the start of the season, with Ronaldo still injured, I would like to see this line up:

Big striker (Berbatov?)

Rooney - - - - - - - - - - -

Nani Anderson Carrick Hargreaves

Evra Ferdinand Vidic Neville

Foster

I think Tevez would benefit from this set up too as he also loves to play behind a classic centre forward and could rotate with Rooney.

Depending on tactics and game requirements, Fergie could bench the big striker and play the Rooney - Tevez partnership.

i think he plays quite well on the wing too, as you can see he can cross the ball for wes brown to head in against liverpool and crossing for ronaldo on the match against derby county! he is quite well on the AM position too... =]
