Owen ready to join Manchester United

Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves says he's willing to move to the
Premiership before the summer transfer window closes.

Manchester United have been linked with a move and Tottenham are long-standing admirers of his energetic style.

Canada-born Hargreaves, 25, said: "I said in the past it would be a great opportunity to play here but so far it hasn't worked out.

"There's not much more to say on the topic except I would love to receive the opportunity.

"I'm 25 and I have a contract at Bayern for the next four years but anything's possible. We've seen that in the past.

"The deadline is not until the 31st of August.

"I can't say what will happen between now and then but with the way the World Cup went for me, more English teams have seen what I can offer.

"Before I don't think teams had really seen me play on a regular basis.

"I'm at a fantastic club in Bayern Munich. They've won many things in the past.

"I have already played 40 games in the Champions League and that's something not every club in England can offer."

Owen Hargreaves desperate to join Manchester United

The England international won over his doubters with a splendid showing at the World Cup finals as he won the Man of the Match award for the penalty shoot-out defeat to Portugal.

Hargreaves has always expressed a desire to play in The Premiership and the opportunity to move to United is one he is itching to accept.

Sir Alex Ferguson has turned to the tenacious tackler, even though he is under contract until 2010, after it looks like he will lose the race for his top target - Lyon's Mahamadou Diarra.

The Mali international has expressed a desire to join Real Madrid as the Spanish giants seem certain to fight off the competition from Old Trafford.

"The offer from Manchester United is fantastic," Hargreaves told Bild.

"It's especially enticing for me as an England international, and you never know if the opportunity will present itself again.

"Now it's time for me to take the next step and develop myself further [as a player]."

"Herr [Dieter] Hoeness knows what a unique opportunity this is for me."

Bayern, however, will not let the Wales-born player leave cheaply and coach Felix Magath has already stressed his opposition to any deal.

"Selling Hargreaves has never been on our agenda," said Magath.

United have only signed Michael Carrick and back-up keeper Thomas Kuszczack this summer as they attempt to mount a serious Premiership challenge to champions Chelsea.

Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves today.

The Sun says the England midfielder is set to be unveiled at Old Trafford after agreeing a dream £13million move.

Hargreaves, 25, got his wish after revealing United manager Alex Ferguson had made him an offer he could not refuse.

And the Canadian-born star pleaded with his club to agree a deal and allow him to move to Old Trafford.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich insisted they did not want to lose Hargreaves and initially demanded £17million while United only offered £12m.

But once the player signalled his intentions to leave, the two clubs thrashed out a compromise figure.

Hargreaves is the defensive midfielder Fergie has been searching for.

The United boss switched his attentions to the England star after his World Cup heroics when Hargreaves was the only one of Sven Goran Eriksson's squad to emerge from the finals with any credit.

This is still speculation. As much as we need and want OH and vice versa - don't forget that he's legally bound by contract to FC Bayern München for the next four years. That's a solid investment by the club and he won't be easily let go of.

With the transfer window closing in just under two weeks time, I expect any move (if at all one does occur) to happen only in the January transfer period.

From Owen's Agent:

"The time has now come to evaluate where he is in his career. Maybe later (Thursday), he will talk with the coach Felix Magath and see how he views things. As he has already said, Owen sees this (United offer) as an excellent opportunity. Owen rates Manchester United on the same level as Bayern Munich with the advantage that, being an England player, it would be better to play at Manchester United.

"There, he could replace (former United player) Roy Keane and play in his favourite position in front of the defence, where he can show off his full abilities. He will continue to push for a move there (to Manchester United), there is no need to discuss any other offers.

"(Yesterday) he was the best player for England, was voted man-of-the-match and he really enjoyed being there. It is only normal for Bayern Munich to say they don't want to sell a player they have brought up through the youth team, even though they can earn €25 million (£17 million) for him."

The Times are reporting it being a £17 million fee and final talks to be held on Sunday, although an agreement is likely to be made prior to that. Looks like Owen's ours. This makes spoon happy.

And now even more "definite" proof - the same security guard who was seen escorting Carrick to OT has now been pictured with Hargreaves.

===========================

Utd get Owen
By SHAUN CUSTIS

MANCHESTER UNITED finally got their hands on Owen Hargreaves yesterday  when the club’s security staff whisked him away from his England hotel.

SunSport pictured Hargreaves being driven off with his United guard at 7.40am as the club closed in on their £13million target.

Bayern Munich are determined to hang on to the midfield ace, who starred in England’s 4-0 friendly win over Greece at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

But he was met at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel by a man from security firm CES, which is used by United.

The same burly guard, an ex-forces member, was recently snapped escorting new Man U signing Michael Carrick.

Hargreaves, 25, desperate to leave Bayern for Old Trafford, was driven away in a silver Audi  one of a number supplied to the club.

Hargreaves’ agent Roman Grill has spent two days in Manchester trying to do a deal with United boss Alex Ferguson.

Owen will make a great signing when and if it happens, he's young, keen and versatile.

Our central midfield in the last few years has been filled with:
Underperforming big name foreigners: Veron, Kleberson
Those playing out of position: Giggs, O'Shea, Smith, P. Neville, Ferdinand
Many who are not good enough: Fletcher, Fortune, Djemba Djemba, Miller
Those someway past their best: Keane, Butt

A midfield with 2 from Ronaldo, Park, Richardson, Giggs wide and 2 from Scholes, Hargeaves, Carrick, Jones in the middle is a match for anyone.

Rooney88: You've just copied and pasted my post originally on the previous page of this thread here. If this has been done in error this once, it's forgiven (if perhaps you were trying to "quote" me). If it's intentional - I'm afraid this behaviour will NOT be tolerated.

Bayern Munich insist they do not have to cave in to Owen Hargreaves' desire to join Manchester United. The midfielder has expressed his wish to clinch a move to The Premiership prior to the closure of the transfer window. After a couple of impressive performances for England, The Red Devils are reportedly ready to pay £17 million for Hargreaves. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his pursuit of the Canadian-born 25-year-old and feels the player wants to head to Old Trafford.

German champions Bayern are digging their heels in and are determined to resist any big-money offers for Hargreaves. With the player under contract until 2010, the Bavarian giants appear to be in a strong position and are determined not to buckle under the pressure of United's interest. "We want to develop a new, young team," Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness told Bild am Sonntag.
"Therefore, we do not sell Hargreaves. "Bayern Munich will never become the ball of the big clubs and become soft starting from a certain sum. "If you only have this image at times, then you are broken."

When asked whether Bayern can keep a player at the Allianz Arena against his will, Hoeness remained optimistic Hargreaves would stay. He added: "Yes, you can do that. "I know that, perhaps, until August 31 his thoughts are with Manchester.

"But, starting from September 1, if the transfer list is closed, his whole heart will again be here with FC Bayern."

Just heard that Hargreaves has been left out of the Bayern team for today's game v Nurnberg.
