Further to all this... it's difficult to know exactly what to think they're up to. One one hand we have the chairman of Bayern saying resolutely there is no chance of Hargreaves leaving ,for any amount of cash.

And on the other hand they are leaving him out of the squad cos 'he has a touch of flu' and the manager of the team saying it's not a problem as he "has other players of equal value".

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed The Red Devils are still interested in landing Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves.

The Old Trafford side tried to land the England international before the transfer window closed in August, but they failed to strike a deal with the Bundesliga outfit. Just weeks after Hargreaves missed out on a Premiership switch he broke his left fibula against Arminia Bielefeld and has not featured since.

Although the Canadian-born star is still on the sidelines recovering, Ferguson has hinted he will renew the club's interest during the new transfer window in January.
"We're still interested," revealed Ferguson. "But there's no update to give at the moment ad we haven't spoken with Bayern again."

Now that he's injured, maybe Bayern Munchen will relent and drop the asking price a bit. OTOH, his lack of fitness and match form might hurt our short-term interests. Still, it's rare to find a decent Brit mid-fielder these days and ATM he's the best that we ca n hope for. (Which really points to how low our status has dropped among the footballing fraternity - remember the Ballack snub?)

Agreed there, we are not the driving force anymore - teams prepared to splash out on players, like Real, Barca and Chelski have undermined us. Still, it could work in out favour. We need to be scouring the lower leagues for talent more. We used to do it in the Busby, Docherty days and with rich rewards - eg: Steve Coppell, Stuart Pearson, etc

OK - more on this growing soap opera:

Bayern Munich want Man Utd swap for Hargreaves

Bayern Munich are interested in a swap deal with Manchester United for their midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

The Sunday Mirror says despite protests from Bayern Munich that Hargreaves will not be sold in January, there is a growing belief at the German club that the England midfielder's £15 million move is virtually inevitable.

Bayern now want to make the deal a part exchange with either O'Shea or Brown moving to Bavaria.
Personally, I don't think any sort of swap deal should be undertaken. We are short of players and we're looking to increase depth in the squad. If we do even consider a swap deal, whom would you rather send packing to Bayern ?

1. O'Shea - a utility player who can play midfield or in defence or even as a wingback.

2. Brown - a defender who's frequently played out of position, gets too few chances and is getting to be an injury concern.

Ryan Giggs has backed Sir Alex Ferguson in his lengthy pursuit of Owen Hargreaves, insisting the England midfielder would ensure Manchester United are 'really strong'.

Ferguson attempted to prise Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window after his impressive displays at the World Cup, but the German champions were steadfast in their refusal to sell.

A broken leg sustained in the opening weeks of the Bundesliga season led Hargreaves to focus on his recovery, but with the winter transfer window just weeks away, the Bayern star has again made no secret of his desire to move to Old Trafford.

Ferguson is expected to reignite his interest in the tenacious midfielder come January, and Giggs is convinced that the addition of Hargreaves would further strengthen United as they aim to hold off a strong title challenge from Chelsea.

"He is a player who would improve us. You want strength in depth and we would be really strong with him," Giggs told The Sun.

"Hargreaves is a quality player and showed that in the summer (at the World Cup)."

Giggs also has his sights set on moving clear of Alan Hansen and Phil Neal in the record books by claiming a historic ninth league winners' medal this season.

United currently top the Premiership by five points ahead of Chelsea, and victory this season could be Giggs' sweetest yet in the face of The Blues' unrivalled spending power.

"Neal and Hansen were involved with the great Liverpool sides and it would be nice to have that record to look back on - a record difficult to beat," Giggs added.

"But the fact that does motivate me now is the fact we haven't won the Premiership for three years, that drives me on.

"And it'll be a great achievement because of what Chelsea have, the ability to buy whoever they want."

h. larson - You've got to back that sort of single-line post with some credible facts.

Ryan Giggs is performing at an exceptional level considering his age and for how long he has been with the club. Being put in a mid-field role has reduced his incisive winging runs, but he has excelled through out the season.

Its Official - We Have An Owen

Franz Beckenbauer confirmed today that Owen Hargreaves has joined Manchester United for £18m.

As the transfer season does not officially kick off till July 1st, that will not be official till then.

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has confirmed that Owen Hargreaves will leave the club for Manchester United this summer. The England international has long been a target for Red Devils chief Sir Alex Ferguson, with Bayern fending off interest from Old Trafford last summer. Hargreaves has made no secret of his desire to move to Old Trafford and in the face of renewed interest from United and the midfielder's desire to move on, Bayern's stance has softened in recent weeks. Bayern are planning an overhaul of their playing staff after falling well short in the Bundesliga and a reported £17million deal will hand the club a substantial transfer kitty.

German magazine Spiegel reported on its website a deal had been agreed and Beckenbauer has confirmed the 26-year-old will head to England this summer. "Owen is leaving," Beckenbauer told Germany's DSF sports television network. "That was the player's wish. It's a good match and it's also a good deal financially." Bayern executive board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has admitted losing Hargreaves will be a big blow. "A player like Owen Hargreaves would have looked good in our team next year," Rummenigge told the club's official website. "In the defensive midfield position Owen is one of the best in the world - it's a big sporting loss for us."

It's great news and it shows United mean business. And there will be more big names on the way. He will be a great player for United. His willingness to do the dirty work in the middle of the park will allow the rest of our attacking players to rip the premiership apart next season and for many seasons to come. He is the fighter we need in midfield, especially since Keane left. He seems like a leader to me ready to give his all for Man U. I cant wait till next season.
