Ronaldo wouldn't be included because he cost the club over £12m, whereas all the player on that list cost £1.5m or under.

It's absurd looking at some of those prices compared to the prices of today and recent years: E.g. Veron, Kleberson, Djemba twins, Bellion etc. They must have cost United nearly £40m between them. Yet Schmeichel, Cantona, Kanchelskis, Sharpe and Solskjaer altogether cost less than £5m.

Why is there such a dispute about Ronaldo? Common people! Imagine we tried to purchase him now? How much? double Veron's fee? What about Zidane's fee? I would say minimum 75 million. 12 million is a bargain for todays market. We cannot compare today's market too the one back when Fergie was appointed imo I would have Keane on the list as well as Schmeichel, and Cantona

No way would I agree with that list. id have Eric and Schmeichel but thats it.

I wrote this post ages ago so apologies if you have read it before......
These are the most important ones in my opinion:
Ill start with the Pally/Bruce combination at the back. These guys were the
foundation of the team in Fergies early successes. Big characters and big players
for us.

Denis Irwin was mr.reliable for united. played over 500 games over 12 years and
only cost £650,000. Bargain

Schmeichel is a united legend, arguably the greatest goalkeeper of all time. He
only cost half a million which is nothing.

Giggs was obviously a great signing and the way Fergie robbed him from under
Citys noses was genius.

In more recent times you cant look much further than Rooney and Ronaldo despite
costing a lot. They could and should become united legends and are very
important to our current team.

Vidic is also a great signing. We needed a tough cookie at the back
in the Bruce mould, which is exactly what he is.

And finally to his two best ever signings. Im finding it tough to seperate them but
I would give second place to Cantona, At 1.2 million he was possibly the greatest
bargain of the century. His name still reverberates around Old Trafford ten years
on. This guy was a genius. He could make something out of nothing and win you
a game in the blink of an eye.He is one of Uniteds best EVER players.

And to Fergies best ever signing. This accolade goes to Roy Keane, Uniteds most
successful captain ever, arguably uniteds best captain ever. The way he
determindly pushed his team forward and drove them on was the main reason
behind uniteds success. When he was out injured for long periods Uniteds form
slumped and that says it all. Perhaps not the flashiest or the most skilful player
ever but he is up there with Best and Charlton and Man Uniteds best EVER player.

Looks spot on to me!

Keane would be next on that list ahead of Irwin and Ronaldo though.
Keane was a transfer record breaking fee, however modest it looks today!

I think Vidic is up there

You make some good points on Ronny but I would bet any money that you
are the ONLY United fan on earth (except maybe Ronny's ma) that would have
Johnson in ahead of Keane and Cantona.
Price tags arent the be all and end all. The 3.75 million for Keane is a pittance
for all he has achieved for the club.

I dont consider cantona and keane as unknown small transfer signings so they dont count yes if you were to ask me our most influential signings they would be in the top five but not this list jazz:cool:

but the thread topic was 'Top 5 bargain buys'.....
1 million for Cantona was bargain of the century and even though Keane's
fee was a record at the time it is STILL a bargain of huge proportions.
He was our most successful captain ever and the main reason we won so
much on the pitch. If THATS not a bargain then I dont know what is.

no way ronaldo is on that list, irwin, cantona, schmeichel, bruce, to list a few, all of them way ahead of ronaldo
£12 million may seem a bargain now. I consider bargains like signing a player for half a million while players at the same time were being sold for say £8 million and then the half million player proves to be even better than any of them. For this reason,

1. Eric Cantona - Won us our first prem title, Double and attracted higher calibre of player to the club as a result

2. Peter Schmeichel - Arguably the worlds greatest goalkeeper of all time. Have you ever had keepers WIN games for a club (remember the Newcastle game at St James). Clean sheet after clean sheet came natural to this guy and his defence respected him.

3.Ole Gunnar Solksjaer - £1.5 million repaid 200-300 times over. Guy will be United legend folklore for centuries to come. Simple as...

4. Les Sealey - FREE Picked this one simply for the amazing game he had for the FA Cup Replay against Palace. Helped get the FA Cup and then went on to lift Cup Winners Cup that moved us onto bigger and greater things. Being FREE at a time when FREE transfers were rarities then make it even better.
