UEFA set to charge club with match fixing - FourFourTwo

COPENHAGEN - UEFA will bring match fixing charges against a European club within days, European football's governing body said on Wednesday.

"There are number of cases we have been looking at," UEFA general secretary David Taylor (pictured) told a news conference after the UEFA Congress.

"It's very complex and very difficult to find proof. But within the next couple of days we will be issuing charges against one club."

Taylor did not disclose what country the club was from. In September UEFA said it was reviewing 10 matches from the current UEFA Cup season and 15 from last season for irregular betting patterns, all in the competition's preliminary rounds.

UEFA will launch a gambling investigating unit next season featuring experts who will review suspected irregularities in matches from European competitions.

"UEFA is setting up this betting fraud detection system across Europe to include 27,000 matches in the first and second division in each national association," Taylor said. "Only a few matches cause us problems but we are determined to root out this problem."

UEFA president Michel Platini called match fixing "a serious risk to football."

"Through this early warning system we will find out what bets are being placed," Platini said. "I'll be extremely firm with those who cheat. I don't accept players who cheat and will suspend them from any activity in football."

UEFA Cup. This season & last. So that rules out most of the big clubs. Bayern & Milan the only big ones playing.

I sincerely doubt Bayern or Milan would want to rig the UEFA Cup. So I'm thinking it's a smaller team.

Manchester City.

lol and it is.....cant even remeber the names of the teams involved...was in a qualifying round aswell according to sky sports
I've just been reading that on Sky Sports' website but I'm a bit confused.

Yesterday UEFA were saying they were investigating UEFA Cup matches from this and last season but the club they have charged were playing in a Champions League preliminary round 5 years ago.

The club that has been charged is FK Podeba from Macedonia.

 How can they throw a game? surely they were never gonna win anyway. never even heard of them.
throwing matches is more difficult than most people must imagine unless there are loads of people involved- from both sides. the only posistion where it is easy to alter a result big time must be the keepers as he can work on his own to say purposley let goals in

My point is that they are an unknown team, presumably a crap team. Who would bet on them winning anyway?

Thats just the point Jazz, whoever the betting ring is was hoping by betting on a small team would go unnoticed but sadly for them bookies would be looking at any large/unusual betting patterns involving any team

Don't believe everything you read in the papers.

I have it from a good source that the strange betting patterns
involve the Bitter blues of Manchester.

Apparently someone bet a whole £1 on them winning a trophy
before the year 2099 sparking the massive investigation.
