Manchester United have made bids for French starlets Jeremy Helen and Darnel Situ.

15-year-old Helen is one of the most sought after teenagers in Europe and United look to have beaten Internazionale, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Newcastle and Everton to a deal.

Helen, a left-back, is currently with Rennes, who United have now opened talks with about a deal as he has a two-year agreement with the French side.

"The player wants to go to Manchester United," admitted Rennes general manger Pierre Dreossi.

"And they have made us an offer.

"We will gather our thoughts and see whether we will consider it or not, but we will defend our interests."

United have already made contact with the family of the Clairefontaine graduate and his mother has confirmed her son is set for Manchester after talks with Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Nothing is settled so far," she told L'Equipe.

"My son has signed a pre-contract with Rennes and we called for a specialist to look at it. Jeremy is a stable boy and I cannot see any difference between living in Rennes or Manchester if you have a good entourage.

"I will spend several months and years beside him if needed and my son and I have talked with Alex Ferguson."

She insists that the move is not financially motivated and insists United offer him the best chance of progressing in his career.

"Internazionale, Newcastle, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Everton also contacted him. Money will not make his choice," she said.

"To him, Manchester offers the best career path."

Helen is currently a French Under 16 international and he could very well be joined at Old Trafford by compatriot Darnel Situ.

Situ - captain of the French Under 16s - is another player United have talked to and now they are closing on the capture of both.

Situ is currently attached to Lens, but like with Rennes, they look set to lose one of their prized assets.

Building for the future.

Wenger gets a lot of acclaim for finding talented youngsters and turning them into superstars. Fergie will want to make sure he leaves United in a strong position for the present and future when he retires.

To be perfectly honest, after what happened to Rossi, Pique and the likes, it is really hard to be excited anymore about any promising new signings, unless they are ready-made from the shelves and can be thrust into first team action immediately.

In this aspect alone, I have to bow my head and whisper that Wenger is definitely more adventurous than Fergie.

Yes, some may scorn at the fact that they have been trophy-less for the past 3 seasons as they renew themselves, including the unthinkable disposal of their captain and talismanic Henry. But with the youngest squad amongst the Big Four, they did threaten to run away until Fabregas was injured, dropped a few unexpected points in a row and out of the title race soon after. And we still have to give them credit for being just 4 points behind us only. Who knows what may happen next season as the youngsters gained another season of experience...

For us, we may never know how high our youngsters can fly the flag for us until we get serious about keeping our young top guns, granting them opportunities and preparing them, not by words but by action, for eventual assimilation into the senior squad.

So we're buying 2 defenders, interesting.
Good thing Fabio & Rafael can play on the wing if they need too. So no real harm in another great young left-back. He won't be challenging Fabio for a few years anyway.

Well, its always good to see us signing some great prospects.

But, will they get an opportunity when their a bit older, or will they just be loaned out, promised first-team football then sold, like Pique and Rossi?

I hope the former but can't help but think the latter.
