Wigan Athletic are reportedly demanding ₤8 million for star midfielder Wilson Palacios, as Manchester United prepare to step up their interest.

The Honduran has impressed for the Latics this season, and along with Ecuadorian team-mate Luis Antonio Valencia has earned strong interest from the likes of United and Liverpool.

And according to The Sun, Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to hammer out a deal to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford in the summer.

But Wigan are reluctant to let their star attractions leave so easily, and have slapped an ₤8 million price tag on Palacios, while Valencia may yet be tempted to stay at the JJB for another season.

An inside source said: “There has been contact between the clubs and Wigan have told United Palacios would cost £8m.

“Steve Bruce wants to keep him but it's difficult to stand in the player's way when United come calling.

“Valencia may stay at Wigan one more season but nothing's been decided yet.â€

United In Saha And Cash Bid For Kid Valencia

It's the mirror, but still.....

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will offer French striker Louis Saha - plus cash - to Wigan in a bid for livewire Luis Antonio Valencia.

The clubs meet in a final-day showdown that will settle the Premier League title, and could be doing business shortly afterwards in a swap deal.

Ferguson is eager to beat Liverpool and other top clubs in the chase for Ecuador international winger Valencia, who has been a major hit for Wigan this season.

Valencia, 22, provided another demonstration of his power with two goals to beat Aston Villa at the weekend.

Saha, out of favour and not in the long-term plans at Old Trafford, is to be thrown into the mix in a bid to make the United package bigger than Liverpool's.

Saha barely figured in United's side in the second half of this campaign, with his injury problems frustrating Ferguson. He was not in on the end-of-season lap of honour on Saturday and will be shipped out after signing off with five goals in 24 appearances.

Fergie hopes Steve Bruce will be interested in the forward and that could help clinch a move for Valencia, with Wigan resigned to losing him in a £10million tug-of-war.

Saha may need to be persuaded that Wigan is the right move for him and his wages will also stretch owner Dave Whelan's coffers at the JJB Stadium.

Valencia would relish a job at United, and the guarantee of regular Champions League football.

Liverpool have expressed an interest in the South American and followed up with a firm inquiry.

But Rafa Benitez is not willing to meet the asking price and they do not have many players who could be makeweights.

Valencia seems certain to make his farewell appearance for Wigan against United on Sunday. And it would be no surprise to see the deal done behind closed doors after the final whistle.

- So these rumours of us plundering Wigan are gathering steam. Is Fergie working the rumour mill or do you think Palacios and Valencia are genuine man Utd standard?

What if Fergie IS trying to use the rumour mill to unsettle Wigan, but it backfires on him, because they will be wanting to strut their stuff now that they are in the shopping window, much like Tevez last season?

Why are all the top clubs after Valencia? Is he that good? Didn't seem like that to me. Anyway, any deal that swaps Saha should be a good one. Hopefully someone will take him from us.

As with most South Americans, he has skill in abundance and combines it with electric pace and a very high work rate, sounds like a fair deal too me :D
 ! Saha and Cash for him ! Naw! Thats insane..... fergie won do it will he !...... Saha is a great striker.... Valencia is well.... mostly untrusted and who knows his qualities.... Well its the mirror tho !
Not keen on Palacios & i don't think he is worth the asking price :(
palacios is an animal, a beats of the midfield one draw bacl though ... he's an arsenal reject should we really want their cast off's? valencia though would be great, i've heard saha plus cash for valencia is being negotiated ? that would be a good deal :)
yesss

well if this valencia deal proves to be true seeing saha go the other way it almost certainly means we will be buying a striker aswell which in my opinion is great news? so who do you think will be the man comming in guys ? and do you think the valencia deal will be good ? personally i do :)

Berbatov! It's gotta be him. He's made all the noises that he wants to be transfered. And it looks like Real are going to land Huntelaar, which leaves us with Berbs.
Even if this were true, which in my opinion it isn't, Saha leaving wouldn't necessarily mean a new striker coming in.

We already have Manucho linking up with the squad in July and given Sir Alex' penchant for playing midfielders/wingers in the rotational strikers role it wouldn't suprise me if that was extended to include Valencia/Palacios.
Palacios & Valencia

United are alleged to be offering Saha plus cash for Valencia (Wigan) and will be sitting for talks next week on signing Wilson Palacios, £8m, also of Wigan.
good news in y opinion, not only gettind rid of saha we're getting another very talented winger, and an powerhouse box to box midfielder ... weather we need them or not it's good news making thhe squad bigger is always good :)
Saha had his best playing days when he was at Newcastle and Fulham and after that, I guess he's just injury prone. A great servant for us nonetheless but his time at United are numbered. Time to hand Tevez the number nine shirt.
