has ronaldo been out of any of the games we lost? has rooney featured in so many games this season? didnt he have like two injuries already this season? to me its simple, ronaldo is the better player. ...
you have articulated your point well but we seem destined to agree to disagree. still that's what this forum is about and long may it continue.
first of all may i take you back to the interview he done last week. To paraphrse him he talked about being the best player in the world. The guy obviously set himself up for the big fall that was last Sunday's display. He needs to learn humility and fast. I accept that he is only 23 but thissort of infantile nonsense only stutters his development as a person and as a player.Even fergie talked about what's poisoning the game is glory hunters pushing teammates out of gthe way after scoring to milk all the adulation of the fans.
now to respond to your post! You make the point that Ronny has the mentality and temperament to perform on the big occasion. With the exception of the 4-2 game against arsenal at Highbury in 05 He has consistently underachieved against liverpool, arsenal and Chelski. He produces the odd special moment like the goal and assist at ghe emirates in November but thes flashes do not mask his overall contribution which is neglible on the big occasion.Same in Europe where, roma home game apart last season, he is simply ineffective against the top defenders on the continent. okay this season he has scored 5 goals and been a lot more prominent but lets get perspective here- it was against mediocre sides like spartak moscow, lisbon etc. the jury is still out until he faces real teams like ac milan.
in saying all that ronaldo is the wolrds best player against average sides that for example make up the bulk of the premiership. But even at that he was playing in 2 of our losses this season-last Sunday and the west ham game where guess who wasnt playing. He was below his best in those games and was lack lustre against villa in the cup til wazza came on and suddenly he and united started playing. That is why I say he needs Rooney as the latter by his mere presence inspires those around him.
rooney in contrast does not need anybody to perform consistently well as a team player. He seems to reserve his beswt performances for the big occasion e.g home game vs milan last season, last 2 cup finals ( where others were anonymous) and has never had a bad game against any of the big three. Even when by his standards he had an unexceptional season the last campaign(due mainly to unwarranted suspensions, tiredness after the world cup when he was forced to play while injured, and being played out of position) he never shirked his responsibiity and chased down lost causes covering every blade of grass in the process. His attitude is so much superior to Ronaldos in that despite being extravagantly talented, he is prepared to scrap for the team.that is why he is loved at ot and that most united fans I know and even in this debate the majority of contributors would choose the scouser over the madeira man.
In relation to what Europe think so what! It is what United fans think that counts that matters. yes rooney is more suited to a British style team and with him being a family man he wont move abroad.okay Ronaldo may adapt better to playing for a continental side but thats for another debate not this one.Even still when you mention Euro 2004 i dont recall ronaldo doing anything out of the ordinary certainly not compared to rooney who announced himself on the world scene with some breathtaking performances. As for 2006 world cup he didnt impress me that much which anyway was a poor tournament for attacking play.
i sincerely hope come may to revise what I have said here but athis moment its rooney for me
off to bed now so hope to talk more tomorrow
p.s let's all keep the faith
