Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that Chelsea's main strength - their squad depth - could end up being their greatest weakness, should results not go their way...
Chelsea have a multitude of talent in every department. The biggest surprise though is the acquisition of Deco - the press, and indeed the fans worked under the presumption that the purchase of the Portuguese playmaker would signal the departure of Frank Lampard to Internazionale. The England international only recently signed a new five year contract.
Michael Ballack, Florent Malouda, Joe Cole, Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel, and Shaun Wright Phillips are also all vying for the four or five midfield places, and Wenger, 58, believes this could be a double-edged sword.
"Chelsea has an abundance of good players. That can be a huge strength, because the Champions League and the Premier League is a marathon, but if it doesn't go well it can be a weakness," he is quoted by the Telegraph as saying.
"There are so many players in midfield that they will have to sacrifice very experienced players. They can't all play at once."
He continued: "For a long time, I thought they would lose Lampard - that's why they bought Deco. In the end, though, they got both."
He concluded: "How will it work with Essien, Mikel, Deco, Lampard, Ballack and Cole will be interesting. But one thing you have to say is they have top quality to chose from."
Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, when in charge of Stamford Bridge, used to accuse Wenger of being a 'voyeur', claiming the Arsenal man to have an unhealthy obsession with Chelsea. He later apologised
What dyou guys make of it? Chelsea have started strong and i dont see them slipping up against Wigan... We travel to play Pompey- A bogey side... Hopefully we will win.. Time will tell?
