West Ham 'fined £30m over Tevez

Sheffield United have won their compensation claim against West Ham after an independent tribunal ruled in the South Yorkshire club's favour regarding the Carlos Tevez affair.

Blades chairman Kevin McCabe revealed that the tribunal found the Hammers guilty of breaching league regulations when they signed Tevez and Argentine compatriot Javier Mascherano, now at Liverpool, at the beginning of the 2006-07 season.

"I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling," he told the club's official website.

"The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour. The matter is still legally in process so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process."

In response to press reports that West Ham face a £30m pay-out to Sheffield United, McCabe said it would be "inappropriate" to discuss the figure at present.

The East London club avoided relegation on the final day of that season at the expense of the Bramall Lane outfit, with Tevez scoring the only goal of the game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The original three-man Premier League arbitration panel, which agreed West Ham had contravened rules on third-party ownership of players, fined the club £5.5m instead of imposing a points penalty which would have seen Sheffield United stay up.

The Championship club have since pursued monetary compensation for the losses incurred by relegation, estimated by them at £50m, which include gate receipts, matchday income from hospitality and restaurants and broadcasting monies.

The three-man panel which judged their claim consisted of former MCC president Lord Griffiths, former High Court judge Sir Anthony Colman and Robert Englehart QC.-Eurosport

That sucks for them. I think Sheffield United really didn't need to push things that far.

In the old days if you were relegated you took it on the chin and planned for next season. These days everybody sues anybody for fun.

Lol poor West Ham. Don't really care what happens to them though.

I feel for Sheffield. They might be in the EPL if it wasn't for all this.

I am very surprised by this. - see!

West Ham were given a record fine of £5.5m by the Premier League and tbh I thought this tribunal would rule that was a sufficient punishment.

To pay £30m to Sheffield United, the amount they lost when relegated, suggests that West Ham were completely at fault for them being relegated.

The fact that Sheffield United were rubbish obviously had nothing to do with it

Neil Warnock is soooo repulsive that they should have had points deducted and forced into relegation. :)

They were utterly useless. Maybe just a shade better than last season's whipping boys Derby.

I suppose they will appeal and I would be very surprised if that sum were to remain the same. Sheffield had had 37 other games to stave off relegation, so this sum is utterly ridiculous.

They're just making excuses for the fact they failed miserably on the pitch. Who the hell are they kidding that they deserve to stay up? Football is decided on the pitch, but those cry-babies knew they were going down so they sought another way to save their sorry backsides.
I was glad to see them go, Neil Warnock is so unbelieveably annoying.
