I have just over a year left of school now and then hopefully on to Uni (as you brits call it) to study some course and get myself a job where I'll have enough money to afford high speed internet connection so I can overtake carly and Jazz to become the highest shouter on the shoutbox!!!
See, I'm thinking ahead ;)

Anyway, any suggestions on what job would suit me or I should aim for? :D

lmao, your aim in life is to overtake me and Carly on how many shouts we have posted..........;-)
dear oh dear Bert, what will we ever do with you.

Anyway my advice would be to go to college cos its a laugh and a degree
will always come in handy if you get stuck in later life.
Do something you have a passion, liking or interest for.
You need to start working out what you want to do, cos it could save you
years down the line.
If you arent to sure what you want to do then maybe do a degree in
business/marketing/management side of things. You get to do a language
(I know you speak some french Bert) and its relatively easy to get with a
bit of waffling and studying at correct times.
Thats what I did and had great fun doing it, even though now my
profession is completely different......

A lot of kids dont really know what they want out of life when they come out of
school so it can be difficult but there IS something for everyone.
Just work hard at the start be it in a job or college and it will hold you in good
stead for the future and try and do something you actually enjoy because
you spend most of your life working.......

^^^ever think about becoming a teacher?
in primary school maybe you could teach English and history......
You get the best holidays all year round. 2/3 months in the summer.
These are things you need to think about........
Planning is always important, so think of the potential benefits
and lifestyle choices you want.

Read this thread a while ago but had no time to write this posting until today. You see, I am down with drug allergy today with puffy eyes. And I do mean very puffy eyes, if you ever had such an experience. I seriously doubt I will be allowed access to my office because probably nobody would recognise me. Lol. In any case, for you bitch, I know I will still have to complete this posting. Only for you, don't tell people....:D

You are not just being humble but wise indeed to seek counsel. And where else but in the forum can you cast such a wide net for free, kind and well-meaning advices. The Bible, too, said that the wise seek counsel; not the 'wise' do not need any counsel and go ahead to do what they think is 'good'. Not that you will surely find your answers here but hopefully at least find some useful pointers or prinicples that you can utilise for your own further inputs in your thought processes. So kudos to you, only sweet 17? :)

I agree with most of what Jazz said. You do and should start planning, if not at least start wondering, as early as possible what you intend to do to save you some years of unnecessary wilderness.

I personally made mistakes galore in my earlier years. After I was done with my studies, I was a bum for one, two years, trying to start this and that with some friends, thinking that I could make it big and impressed my doubting parents, relatives and peers alike. I was young, fearless, strong-headed and honestly thought that success in life is so easy when I was actually just plain lost and knew not what I was doing. I didn't know I needed advice... After suffering enough consequences, I was finally persuaded by my best friend that what I really needed to do was to wake up from my big fat dream and get a proper paying job for crying out loud. Lol.

And more mistakes were made when I joined the advertising industry I thought I was interested in. Lasted a year or so before I knew it was not what I really wanted. Depressed and desperate, I then only started to ponder seriously what I really wanted to do in life, something you are doing now at 17!

Anyway, I then thought I 'realised' I had actually always wanted to be a banker so I did the first wise thing by squeezing myself into the finance industry albeit pretty late and without the relevant experience, thus starting from a low position. So you think that would be hunkie dorie till now? Surprisingly, nope again. I stayed there for a total of 5 years but something was still amissed and I slowly realised again sadly that I was still off track! Why? Because banking is not my passion and neither is employment for me... I finally realised what I truly wanted halfway through these 5 years but did not leave immediately due to the then catastrophic Asian crisis in 1997, obviously out of fear and financial insecurity. All in all, I spent 7, 8 years in wilderness until 2000 when I finally took the courage to plunge into my current profession, 5 months before my marriage...

Long story thus far perhaps but probably there are already a few things you may like to take note of. Firstly, you may not be able to know what you really and truly want until some suitable time no matter how hard you try. Secondly, interest is not enough, you need passion. That something that makes your spirit stirs within you, never felt it as a job per se but both a challenge and pleasure, wanting not just to do it well but to excel in it and having the undying desire to do it for the rest of your life. Thirdly, passion is not complete too, it must also be complimented by your strengths or at least inclinations so that you have a pretty fair chance of doing well in it. For example, I may have the passion for football but I know I can't even get into my local community team no matter how hard I try. Know what I mean?

Thus, at this point in time, you may perhaps like to start to think about your passion and inclinations. Marry both of them and you would probably at least be pretty close.

So surely that would be it? Not really again. There is yet another aspect of what you really want in life to ponder about too that has got nothing to do with passion or inclinations... Is financial rewards your concern? How about time factor?

Inspired by books that I read and whatever thoughts I have gathered, I do have an interesting theory to share. I call it the Money/Time Quadrant. Briefly, it is as follows:

Quadrant 1: Have Money Have Time
- Having money but no time is useless.
- Investors, non-hands-on business owners (their businesses are auto-pilot and do not need your involvement eg franchise, having managers working hard for you) etc.

Quadrant 2: Have Money No Time
- You can't stop working and must be physically present to maintain your income and lifestyle.
- Professionals like doctors, lawyers etc, hands-on business owners (their businesses need them) etc.

Quadrant 3: No Money Have Time
- Happy go lucky, nothing bad in itself.
- Plain bums who hate to work, people who desire the simple lifestyle etc.

Quadrant 4: No Money No Time
- Saddest of the lot, honest, hardworking but struggling with life.
- Low paying jobs etc.

Which quadrant do you REALLY want to be in?

So there you have it, K4T. I have spent almost my entire afternoon doing this posting just for you. Hope you may find some pointers or principles useful for yourself. As a faceless friend behind the keyboard from afar, that is the best I can do for you.

I wish you well.... Bitch.:)
