Ferguson warning to United stars
Sir Alex Ferguson has emphasised the importance of discipline following some unwanted front-page headlines at Manchester United recently.

Ferguson has notoriously taken a hard line with his players throughout his career and has not been afraid to sell some of the club's biggest stars.

His latest comments come after revelations about the club's Christmas party made front-page headlines.

The Scot said: "Football has changed but you cannot lose your control. That is why we make changes here at Manchester United when we see anyone interfering with this sense of control.

"When we see this, then it's time for them to go because this club is based on everyone being together.

"When we start going off at tangents you have to assess it - definitely."

Ferguson has also expanded on his dislike of the celebrity lifestyle now enjoyed by many high-profile players.

He added: "What annoys me about some players today is this personal glory thing.

"They score a goal and then knock players out of the road so they can have their own private, personal gratification and praise from the fans. It's ugly seeing these kind of celebrations.

"These present-day footballers need to be noticed, with their earrings and tattoos. They no longer go to the small Italian restaurants but to the big and bright places."

I think definitely Ronaldo is the true representative of these claimes ...

Well said Fergie! U really wanna noe the answer? I shall be frank with u guys then.....he's actually referring to Ronnie indirectly.:) Why? It's as simple as:

1)If u watch clearly the Ronnie's goal in the United game against Le'Arse-Anal,u will notice that Carrick was about to tap it in when Ronaldo pretty much pushes him out of the way to grab the personal glory.
2)SAF is also referring to him with the ear ring & tatoo thingy as well.

FFS,can somebody juz' tell me why no players in this world can be like Wayne Rooney?! He's a young, great player, depicts the never-day-die attitude in the 'beauiful game',he's juz an “Every Day Champions”,a man who know how to bring his own personal style and sheer passion on the field, professionals from various sectors of the world of planet football, devoted to whatever endeavours and hardships they undertake. Who play to win but also know how to lose graciously.
In lightness, with great team-spirit,honourable respect & top class sportsmanship.
Hands up for Wazza, the 'White Pele'!;)
*FYI,if I nvr remember wrongly,he actually said something like that to the public b4 offloading a Paul Ince, who was reaching the peak of his performance on the pitch to Inter Milan.

RONALDO missed a pen and wow everyone attacks him ffs
Look,it's not about Ronnie's missed penalty. It's about as a footballer,u must know how to differ from right & wrong. Ronaldo's a great footballer, probably the best in the world currently. But his attitude isn't exactly one of the best in the world. Minus the incesant diving & selfish attitude,I could clearly see him as the best in a few years time.

As much as i agree with what SAF has said, when clubs are paying the players as much as they are its obvious they'll "no longer go to the small Italian restaurants but to the big and bright places."

Also......i dont think he was aiming this at Ronaldo personally, more just general footballers who go out looking to get their names in the paper.

Fergie was referring to the Xmas party.....

Which Ronnie didn't attend....

Rio organised this party.....

And he has been a bit wayward in his actions at times.....

If anyone it's Rio he is upset with.....

But I wouldn't bother with all this speculation.

Ronnie, Rooney and Rio aren't going anywhere so why worry !

It's obvious his comments were brought on in response to the "Christmas Party Incident" but I think alot of he said had more to do with his disappointment in player attitudes in general. Not just limited to ManUtd players either.

I think the christmas party, for Fergie, was just another glaring example of what's really gone wrong.
As far as Ronaldo, yea he may have his faults, we all do but it's obvious he wasn't talking about just 1 player.

I wish he would come and deflate the oversized sports egos here in the states, we could use more like Fergie!

I definitely agree that Ronaldo has his greedy moments (taking the pk from tevez's hat trick for example), but you have to remember, most of our team are quite young both in age and maturity (on and off the pitch). This is just part of growing up, and the consequences that comes with having a youthful team.

Today's society is all about bells and whistles. If you got it, flaunt it. That's exactly what they're doing. Honestly, I think it's all fine, as long as they can keep their personal and professional lives separate.

i was at the game and the players just didnt click west ham were playing like it was a champions league final and were defending really well. As SAF said they deserved it simple as.
what's funny and tragic at the same time is that WH didn't play that good, they only kept pressing us, but we decided to play with no passion and to me ronaldo played as if he was thinking - well i got a goal , so i'll just walk arounf the park...in fact everyone played like that except hargo....

Seems I'm not the only one thinking he aimed this toward Rio.....

United have had a relatively successful December, picking up fifteen points from a
possible eighteen. The loss against West Ham yesterday cost us our place at the
top of the table, but following the events of the Christmas party, I'm surprised
the price we had to pay wasn't more severe.Stories of roastings and rape were
all over the papers, tabloids and broadsheets alike, which will have left Sir Alex
Ferguson seething. He had begrudgingly given in to the players' wish for a
Christmas party, Rio Ferdinand leading the way. Ferdinand planned the do,
drafting in hand picked girls to accompany the players in the bars and hotel they
went to. Wives and girlfriends were banned from attending the all night party
which finished at Great John Street Hotel, with the event looking a recipe for
disaster the moment the plans were leaked to the press.

Ferguson likes to keep his players on a short leash, successfully managing to
protect the youngsters from outside influences which could damage their career.
Lee Sharpe was the one who got away, hitting the self destruct button on his
footballing pathway. Beckham, Giggs, Butt, Scholes, the Nevilles, Gillespie etc.
have all enjoyed long football careers after undergoing the early guidance of
Ferguson, who is well known for employing 'spies' to make sure his players were
behaving as they should be.

Today, our manager has spoken out about the people who may pose a threat to
the strict controls over the players, and how they must be dealt with
immediately. “Football has changed but you cannot lose your control,†said
Ferguson. “We make changes here at Manchester United when we see anyone
interfering with that control. When we see this it's time for them to go. Times
have changed for me as a manager. But this club is based on everyone together.
When anyone starts going off at tangents you have to make changes.â€

He couldn't possibly be talking about Rio Ferdinand here, could he? A cockney
wideboy who has made no attempt to hide his love for bling, orchestrating the
Christmas orgy fest which resulted in one of youngsters landing himself with a
rape charge.

Ferguson doesn't stop there though. “What annoys me about some footballers
today is the personal glory thing,†he added. “They score a goal and knock
players out of the road so they can get personal gratification and play to the
fans. The present day footballer needs to be noticed with his ear-rings and
tattoos. But people in general need to be noticed, it's not just footballers. They
don't go to small, intimate restaurants, they go to places that are big and bright
where you are seen and get noticed. It is difficult to control.â€

Sir Alex Ferguson is a man who ruthlessly gave David Beckham, Jaap Stam and
Ruud van Nistelrooy the chop. Does Rio Ferdinand need to watch out?

carly - what confuses me is this thing he said - What annoys me about some players today is this personal glory thing.

"They score a goal and then knock players out of the road so they can have their own private, personal gratification and praise from the fans. It's ugly seeing these kind of celebrations.

i hardly see rio scoring goals for his "personal glorification"

Hi just thought I'd shed some more light on that article that you and then Carly posted. it's kinda taken out of context. here's the link to the youtube vid of SAF having a chat as you can see it was on Setanta and I think it was done before the whole x-mas party scandal (correct me if I'm wrong though). and it's here where he talks about the modern day footballers with the tattoos and earings and things. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oSoU5KdcxA

hope this gives you an idea of how sometimes the media like to cause a stir.
