I haven't played football since I was at school but I thought I'd share the story of my one and only cup final appearance with you.
I was a centre-back at school but was also asked to go in goal if anything happened to our keeper because I seemed to have a handy knack of saving penalties in training.
I was 15 at the time and my instructions from the coach were simple - do not cross the halfway line under any circumstances, don't try anything fancy and if under pressure just boot it!
I didn't do a great job because we conceded 2 goals but luckily we scored 2 too! We were knackered at full-time but thankfully there was no extra-time - it was straight to penalties.
The coach called us over to the touchline and that was when he dropped his bombshell. He turned to me and said: "I want you in goal for the penalties." Jesus wept, I nearly crapped my pants.
They won't allow us to change keepers I thought...but they did. Our regular keeper won't want to hand over his gloves I thought...as he handed over his gloves, patted me on the back and wished me luck. Oh s**t, I thought.
They went first and I dived the wrong way for it, we scored, then they scored again after I went the right way but couldn't get my hand to the ball, we scored and then my moment of glory...I got my fingertips to their penalty and pushed it onto the post! Hooray!
My joy was short-lived however as our next penalty was missed and I again dived the wrong way for their penalty so they lead 3-2 and then, horror of horrors, we missed again!
If they scored their next penalty it was all over! Their player struck the penalty ferociously, I dived to my right, the ball sailed above me, I heard it smack the crossbar, YES I thought in the split second before I felt the ball hit my backside. I turned around in horror as I watched the ball roll over the line. It had hit the underside of the bar, then me and gone in.

I couldn't believe it.
We didn't even get runners-up medals!!! Football can be a heart-breaking game at times!
