Its 2009 and we have moved on a Race and things are more excepted then the older years.

We now have a black president which is wondeful and we all live in a mixed race socitiey and it seems fine.

So why on earth cant a Footballer announce he was gay ?

Fear of the fans chanting gay remarks we would just kick them out like racist so why cant gays come clean and come out of closit in the game ?

Oooh, good question.

I recently heard reports coming from Italy that a male prostitute had claimed that over 20 Serie A footballers were regular clients of his. The prostitute also said that the footballers were terrified of their sexuality becoming public knowledge and he refused to name any of them.

Although I truly believe that we live in a more tolerant society these days I think it would be very difficult for an openly gay footballer. I have no doubt that he would be a target for fans and I fear that the level of abuse he would get would astonish a lot of people.

Although tbh I do not see why something as private as your sexual preferences should be made public. I think Max Mosley would agree. :D

This is a joke right? We have never been FINE in a mixed race society.WE dont have a black president,America do and the fact he is black has no bearing on it whatsoever. Its becuase the idiot that ran against him was so off his face on crack that not even the most anti black groups would want that clown in charge

Anyway back on topic.....

I dont think a footballer HAS to come out gay.Theres no law saying you should and its probably a lot less stressful for the player/team if they don't.Theres a few who havent denied it like Freddie Jungberg but i dont think its really an issue in football. We all know they are a bunch of tarts :p

I can see people's points of view !

Rooneys temper!

Regards we have a black presedent yes I know that he isnt our pres but he is the most powerfull man on the planet so it effects everyone.

And I believe Manchester is a mixed race city that rarely has any problems .

There will be people who claim Oldham had riots a few years ago but I dont count Oldham as manchester its part of Greater manchester not manchester.

supporters already jump on anything they can to get at opposition players,so although in the footie world itself their fellow players would accept it,can you imagine the stadium full of noise and abuse toward a gay player...noooo they can't come out of the closet ,not just for their own sake but what their family too.

Well, there was an article in a newspaper a while ago (I think it was on this site) and was an interview with Paul Elliot (former Chelsea and Celtic defender.)

He does work for the "Kick it Out" campaign, which is not just about race but also about bigotry, and other abuse. In this interview, he said that he knows of 12 players who are gay but are too scared to come out, because of the reaction (crowd reaction here) it would cause.

But, talking about a player, he obviously would be able to announce it, but it would make life difficult for him.

The crowd reaction would be terrible. You just have to look at the Spurs fans, who were chanting homophobic abuse at Sol Campbell. He hasn't revealed he is gay, if indeed he is, but still received dreadful abuse. So can you imagine the abuse an openly gay player would receive?

On a sidenote, John Fashanu's (former Wimbledon player) brother Justin committed suicide because he was gay and his life was made a misery.

I just don't see any wisdom for a player to voluntarily put himself in the spotlight for non-footballing reasons. To borrow from a Cantonese saying, it would be tantamount to "stuffing worms into your own arse"; literally translated.

Speaking of the whole Kick Racism thingy, where does the Park song fall within that? I mean it is openly racist against people from the Republik of Korea.

I was going to sing it last night but as I was the only person around me singing and there were a pair of stewards glaring at me, I decided not to. :p

Well, I would hazard a guess that it isn't considered racist as it isn't used to insult anyone, but instead is, well, banter and support for a player.

But I'm not really sure, and you do have a point.

If he could handle the constant abuse then why not?

I doubt anyone would be able to take it though, he'd never hear the end of it.

You know what is kinda funny, the same guy that started this thread sent me a PM saying being gay is a sin. True story. It gets better, I'm not even gay.

So yeah, I don't think it would be smart for a player to come out.
