Chelsea have made the first solid steps towards signing Russian revelation Andrei Arshavin, according to reports.

The Mirror claims that Zenit St. Petersburg have accepted a ₤12million bid from the Blues, and that Arshavin will arrive in London later this week to agree personal terms and undergo a medical.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is desperate to bring in one of his compatriots over the summer, and is similarly keen to ship off mega-flop Andriy Shevchenko in the process.

New manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has already brought Portuguese playmaker Deco to Stamford Bridge and is supposedly eyeing Real Madrid winger Robinho, but Abramovich – at the risk of incurring Scolari’s wrath only days into his tenure – has guided his hand toward Arshavin.

Barcelona are also very interested in the 27-year-old, who has already revealed he is favourable to a Spanish switch.

But a Zenit source said: "Chelsea have been in contact, a deal agreed and Arshavin will fly to London to discuss personal terms.

"He was very attracted by the chance of playing in Spain but feels English football would suit his style better and, with Roman Abramovich involved, there is another link and reason."

He stays in Zenit and I'm glad about that - he's a real diamond. Some of you said he only played 2 good matches on Euro and than failed. First of all, he played 2 VERY good games scoring twice and creating the other goals. Secondly, Spain overplayed our midfield totally - they are really the best team in the world now. Thirdly, he's not a revelation - he's been a top player at least since 2005. He was named the best player of RPL 2005 and 2006, then second in 2007. Just look up the videos in youtube about him, typing "Arshavin" - a lot to see and admire
